Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Mine are crazy-friendly. I have to walk like Tim Conway in his old man skit when I'm in with them. Sometimes I wish they would run from me! A couple of them also insist on being cuddled and cooed over.

I am hoping my roos stay friendly...

When I had ameraucana the different varieties had different personalities the Wheatens were very friendly but my BBS birds ran the other way when they saw me coming.

Mine are very sweet and insist on asking where their treats are when you feed them.
Funny, funny chatty things.
My one roo is a lap chicken and my DD wanted to use him for showmanship.
He did kill another roo, but is great with people.
The boys are polite to the hens and dont go after my kids so can't ask for much more.

I think the chicks are flighty at that teenage stage.

Everyone mentioned how flighty their Ameraucanas are but has anyone noticed the Amer. roos being particularly more aggressive than other breeds? I have a Buff Orp. roo and a FBC Marans roo, and they are fine...but these darn Amer. roos are just plain mean. They were all pretty flighty as chicks, but then the roos started becoming aggressive. I tried the "put them in their place" technique, but that only makes them back down for the time being...wait 'til they think you're not looking!

They are only a little over one year--do you think they will settle down any as they get a little older?

None of the Ameraucana roos I have had were aggressive. I got a blue and a blue wheaten from pips & peeps and they were just both wonderful "gentlemen". The wheaten/ blue wheatens are almost lap chickens... many of those I got from pasofinofarm.

The current small Blue Wheaten roos I have retained are just sweethearts as well. I'l have to take pics.

I've only ever heard good things about Ameraucana temperament; just one of the reasons I wanted them. My EE'S have all been nice, too.

My wheaten roo is not agressive- but he is definitely "top guy" when the welsummers & cochins are out too. If I had a "mean" roo- I would not use him for breeding because personality is a priority for me, and I wouldn't want to pass any of that on. I've been really happy with the overall averge personality of the ameraucanas though. I want birds that are approachable and they are not quite as "lovey" as the cochins and orps, but not as independent as my wellies either. Just right

My Ameraucanas are flighty but seem to be a little more calm now that they are approaching 6 months. The roos are fine. My FCM roos were mean. One attacked my son. They went bye bye. I have one FCM hen and she's clueless. She can't even figure out how to get out of the coop. Bless her heart!

Quick question: what does Lavender split mean?
