Right- she might show up. I've had girls dissappear on me- especially after a move. Then 2 days later I find that they were sleeping on a shelf in the barn.

Hope she turns up for you!

Maybe a human varmint? Quite a few puppies get stolen out of their own backyards in my area.

You know, I thought the same thing for a minute. But I don't understand why they would just take 1? It's not like it would be hard to scoop up a couple of the smaller pullets? There was no indication though that the bird was attacked and carried off. Maybe I should start locking my gate...

I sure hope she turns up alive and well . While I hate to say it , I saw a fully grown coon running in full daylite yesterday . Raccons are usually pretty well populated in urban areas . I've also seen a fox living in my town , and a lady near here but in a smaller town asked if I would like to come over and dig the coyote pups from under her garage to keep as pets . [ I declined ] The mother was three legged and I suppose had figured out a way to eek out a living in town .

Sorry about your pullet. I'm going to guess a hawk. We can't let ours free range because of hawks. The hawks here will dive down at a chicken right in front of us.

I live in Los Angeles and we have hawks over our yard every day. A few weeks ago I was eating in a restaurant and a hawk flew in! During the same meal, another bird flew in later!

I live in Baltimore and I have lost birds to hawks, foxes, and coons. You would be suprised what shows up in the suburbs or city. Dogs and cats can also be a big problem.

Jeremy, I'm so sorry to hear about your pullet. I'd definately cover the run as soon as possible. My back run is really large so it's uncovered but it's also completely hidden by trees, and luckily I've only seen one hawk in the 2 1/2 years I've had chickens. Possums, racoons and coyotes are the biggest preditors out here, but they're usually only around at night, and my birds are all locked up tight by then. By the way, how tall is your run? Could the pullet have flown out?

SteveH, thanks for the compliment. I just love the birds! And thanks for the recommendation. Maybe I'll look into it sometime in the future, but right now if it's "not very cheap" then I'll have to pass. I'm a substitute teacher and don't work in the summer, so it would be hard to justify the extra expense. I don't really NEED it, but I sure do want it!
