Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Unfortunately, I went to our county fair and there were about 6 birds entered as Ameraucanas. They were all EEs. They were judged and the only one excused was one that didn't have a beard. Very disappointing. The judge said if he excused every bird that should be, he would have nothing left.

I am obviously by far no expert on the breed but from my understanding an americauna has slate colored legs, a beard cheek feathers that poke out and the pea comb. Their feathers on their neck look fuller to me also. Now, I've seen pics of both EE and Americauna's and they look the same to me. So could somebody please educate me? I have done research and i'm still confused. I read that a true Americauna hen lays blue eggs. OK, well I have5 hens and 2 of them lay blue eggs. The kicker is the mother to the other 4 lays olive eggs. The other hens that lay olive eggs lay a very pretty egg compared to the mothers. The Roo I bought at an auction and was told he was an americauna. He had all the qualities I spoke earlier of.

So how can some of my girls be EE's and the others be americauna's when they came from the same hen and roo? If I get a pure americauna roo and these girls I have are bred, lay and hatch the eggs, what will the chicks be?

Are you as confused as I am?

What i'm asking is an education on the difference. I want to get into this breed and have pure and the only way to do that is to know what i'm doing. I read that Americauna's can lay blue, olive, pink and brown eggs. that came from one of the sites I found the other day on Americauna's. They said that they are concidered the Easter Egger because of their colored eggs.

What are the characteristics of an Americauna. I've seem pics of both and they look the same to me.

I got a little more educated when I read all I could on this website...

Check it out. I have 5 EE chicks that are sooo cute but I am sure curious about Ameraucanas. One of these days.

Emvickery,
There are lots and lots of threads on the differences between Ameraucanas vs Easter Eggers, right here on BYC. Try doing a search and you should come up with plenty of information.

You can tell right away if the color is not a standard one. Green legs are a give-away as well. BTW- I have a lovely true blue wheaten girl that lays white eggs. Egg color does not determine breed.
