Do all the splash wheatons roos have grey beards like yours when they grow up? He's lovely! I have 2 young ones (amongst my 13 roos and 10 hens) and will be culling soon.......

Do allthe splash whaetons roos have grey beards like yours when they grow up? I have 2 young ones and will be culling soon.......

There is no standard for the splash wheatens because their color can vary from bird to bird. That is one of the reasons why they are not recognized by the Ameraucana Breeders club.

They're penned with my Delaware cockerel anyways, so I'll have to at least wait a month to ensure that they aren't fertilized by him anymore.

No reason to wait about incubating pullet eggs ........ who knows a varmint might get her while you were cooking her eggs and waiting . Go ahead and hatch them and i'll guarantee you will never know which chicks were hatched from the first eggs !!!!

I think the main reason people wait is so the eggs will be bigger, which gives more room for developement which reduces likelyhood of deformities, since most pullet eggs are smaller at first. It doesn't have anything to do with the fertility but alot to do with hatchability. It's no fun waiting patiently to end up getting disappointed. There are people on here with way more experience than me that could probably give a better answer just thought i would share what i believe i read somewhere else

I have alot of questions for you all. I am in the research and planning stages of setting up my first Ameraucana flock...

In the spring I am hoping to find and collect a small flock of quality Am's. I am hoping to get a Wheaton trio, plus a black, and a blue hen. Is there any reason that any of you would sudgest that I start out with just the Wheatons? What pros and cons are there to having a small mixed colored flock?

I plan on keeping things small scale, and doing alot of culling and or rehoming of cockerals and pullets that I decide not to keep. Would raising the young for 4 - 6 months, be a long enough period of time to be able to tell who has the best qualities?

How hard is it to find quality started stock? Ive looked here on BYC, Ive tried registering with the Ameraucana forum site "will be joining the Ameraucana breed club in the spring." I have been talking to ALOT of people, and doing alot of research. Granted I will not be ready until spring to bring any birds home. I guess what I am really asking is, how would you sudgest I go about contacting reputable breeders about their birds? Ive only ever bought birds from hatcheries and feed stores... So I am at a loss as to where to start...

Please try and have some patients for a newby to the breed. I really want to learn, and may bug the crud out of you all with questions.

Here's my blue roo I got from Citygirlinthecountry. Sadly I've had to move the whole flock cause he got me caught. $150.00 fine from the city and was told to remove the birds. He's a very good rooster, and I can get them back when they become legal. It should be six months from now.

Thanks for telling me about mixing the colors. Thats something I am happy to know. I still think I want a blue and a black hen, but will seperate them before I go to collect hatching eggs. How broody are AM's? Like I said, I'm new to the breed. lol

Illia reminded me yesterday that she has AM's. lol I can't figure out how or why I forgot. I have heard good things about pips&peeps, but we have never spoken.

I really would like to experience showing at least on a local level. But I also don't want to go at it blindly iether.

I think I'm forgetful because I have not been breeding for years, and am not an ABC member. . . Yet. . . .

I'm not a member of any club, though. . . YET.

Course, next year, next year, I'm adding Buff Ameraucanas to my collection. I know they have horrid egg color, but I REALLY want to work with them, and I looove their color. Plus we have SO much blue, black, splash, silver laced, black copper around here. . . That all just melts down to "black, grey, and white."
