The F1's look almost identical to brown reds...I posted pictures on ABC They are purrrdyy. I can't wait unitl I can start hacthng and get those elusive lav wheaten chicks.

I was just outside saying hello to my girls and of course they all came running looking for treats, so I sat down and just held my hands out to coax them over (my 2 ameraucana girls aren't the friendliest, they are skittish and don't want to be caught, but when I do pick them up they are very calm and nice about it), and my BW Ginger kept coming right up close and pecking my hands looking for treats so I reached out to pet her...and she squatted for me!! I was shocked, usually if I reach out to pet her she jumps away. So I picked her up and told her she was a good girl and carried her around for a bit, and when I put her down she just stayed with me and kept coming right up to me and checking me out

She's never been that friendly

(so I went and got her some scratch) Her comb and face have been getting redder and redder and she's about 24 weeks old. So do you think eggs will be far off? When my cochins started squatting they started laying a week or two after.

WHOA those are yours? I saw those when they were first posted and thought they were Brown-Red projects. . . They're gorgeous!

I came home this evening to find that my BW cockerel has gone missing. I looked everywhere for him. I even went to the neighbors on either side of me and checked their back yards.

Claude had a habit of fence jumping, even though the fences are 8ft high... he typically would jump over into the younger teenager's pen and stay there. Well today either something got him or he decided to go explore a bit further...

Any chance you've got a BW or splash wheaten cockerel growing out right now Jean that appears to be somewhat breeder quality? I'm honestly not looking to show, just interested in a boy that would make pretty babies for me.

Sigh.

oh wow I have so much to learn about breed standards, colors genetics etc! I have an ameracauna roo that is black and white. Are they supposed to be solid or is multiple colors ok? That is a big beautiful black roo!

Black and White is only found on Silver Ameraucanas, but are you sure he's a true Ameraucana? Often hatcheries, feedstores, and even backyard breeders sell what they claim are Ameraucanas, but are crossbred chickens. Black and White or Black, gold, and white are common crossbred colors.

So to answer your question, only the recognized colors are okay - And some are multiple, but only of certain color combos.

crazyforcolor here is a picture of my boy. he is from a hatchery. He was supposed to be a she but is beautiful none the less

I have a been a horse person my whole life and if you breed you breed for quality first, disposition and then somewhere in there comes color if your into colors like I am. If that would be my priority for a horse I think it should probably be the same way with a chicken. So I am interested in breeding colorful chickens but I want quality to so I'm guessing I will be looking for new chickens for my breeding purposes and keeping them separate from my egg production flock. I'm also starting to figure it's going to be best to pick a breed or 2 or 3 and not 20......and focus on them. Oh how do I choose there are just to many beautiful birds!

Well, the only sad difference with your comparison on horses is that hatchery based "Ameraucanas" aren't actually Ameraucanas - They're mutts. Some have Ameraucana behind them, but your best bet if you really want to get into the breed is to actually purchase some hatching eggs or birds from a reputable breeder.

That being said, he still is pretty. And I do love color, however if you want something flashy like that in real Ameraucana form, there's the Silver Ameraucana -

And here's a female silver:

I am quickly learning that I am going to have to leave the hatcheries and look for other breeders. I can see from looking through several pages of this thread I have mutts that lay gorgeous eggs! He's not hurting anything keeping my laying flock company but I won't use him for breeding purposes. I am looking at next spring to start buying breeding stock. Just researching different breeds trying to make up my mind.

There is no comparison between my guy and the one you posted. I have been reading a BYC article on the difference between the 3 breeds and I didn't know....
