lol- thanks! I'm buying a pullet from halo (purely for looks, not breeding) and I was just curious what to "label" her as. I don't actually care if she's at the SOP or not- I just like cute chickens

I have a few beardless girls, and it looks like I just got some clean faced chicks from somewhere else

I don't want those lovely blue eggs to go to waste so I got myself some blue copper marans to make olive eggers with them. Figures- the clean faced ones are my friendliest and fattest of all the wheatens- I'd love to pass their disposition on to pure chicks, but don't want to pass on the fault

Came home from the Lebanon Indiana Show today with some pictures of my Ameraucana bantams. I took one hen and a pullet. I didn't do as stellar as I wanted, but I got RV which isn't bad. The last show I took Res AOCCL and the before that Ch. AOCCL so I guess I had high expectations but here are the girls comments (critiques) VERY welcomed

This is my little rebel pullet that tears everthing up! She is the one that has done so well. She is 10 months old and she has won BB, BV, Res. AOOCL, RV, Ch. AOCCL, and 2 1st places and a 2nd.

This my hen she is 2 yrs old and this was her first show. I decided to bring her at the last minute just because. She got a 1st place today.

i have hatched about 75 BBS Ameraucanas from my quad and out of all that i have 3 with no beard and muffs

Listen no matter how good the birds are you are still going to get culls. The best you can do is produce 10% better birds than the original pair generally. Only if you have a prepotent male can you expect better than 10% high quality offsprings. So your percentage is not that bad if you got 3 obvious culls out of 75. Remember there are recessive genes that are not visually seen in the phenotype of the birds. So that is why every body gets culls even if they do not admit they do. Now the muffs and beards since you have some birds with only one gene you will need to keep the birds with the largest muffs and beards and hope they are carrying both genes for this trait. Good luck and next year they should improve if you properly cull. Oh, and if they don't have muffs and beards they are considered culls and should not if all possible be used in your breeding program since they will not really be considered Ameraucanas but really EE's because of the defects.

Since this is the Ameraucana thread I will only discuss Ameraucanas. I have many Lavenders growing right now and some black split lavenders also. So I would say mostly lavender Ameraucanas and some splits. I may breed some pure blacks but not exactly sure since my splits are looking very good quality. I plan on maybe buying some new black stock this spring but they have to be exactly what I want now. I had some killer roosters a few years back from Larry Clionsky and wish I would have kept the one that I called Lucifer, mean as all heck but the nicest rooster I had ever had but had to get rid of him because of his attitude.
What about yourself? What are you persuing this spring?
