Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Does crossing birds of different lines have a tremendous effect on the resulting progeny?

So far I only have stock from you Jean. What if I were to look elsewhere for stock, would the chicks that I then hatched not be to standard? What are the most problematic occurances with outcrossing, lack of egg color?

pips&peeps :

It just depends on what mother nature gives you, the genes are a toss up. I have some fairly new lines of lavender and some are laying nice blue eggs and some are laying green/khaki.

Just don't outcross to a bird with yellow skin, it can haunt you for generations. (which includes orloffs)

Interesting. Luckily, I have some very pretty culls with white skin! (Just went out and double checked. Yay for hatchery birds!)

A couple of (dirty face) mugshots of our Ameraucanas.

A not-very-good picture of them both.

I have two Black Roos who come from a good line, have nice type- but their eye color is a light brown rather than the reddish bay color. Is there anyway to breed this out other than start over with new stock?

How old are they? If over a year, they aren't going to change. If your other birds have good eyes go ahead and use them, but replace with a better cockerels from next year's hatch.

Got my first eggs this week from my mixed flock of 20 chickens (7 Ameracaunas). My A's aren't anything special, I just picked them up here and there but the first eggs (probably from just two of the pullets) had better color than I expected. Does the color fade with future lays or can I expect at least these two girls to keep up the good work?

Anyone in Arkansas near LR have any Brown Red Ameraucanas? I'll be looking for a rooster come about spring time. I want one to put with my Easter Eggers. I also would like to find someone with Golden Duckwing Araucanas for a rooster for the same purpose.
I want these for myself and will not be trying to seel as purebreds, I like my EE's but want to try to get a little bit bluerr looking egg.
Thanks for listening and let me know if anyone near has any.

Don't you mean Silver Ameraucanas? Gold Duckwing Ameraucanas don't exist, anything close would be Easter Eggers.

Runalong - Very nice eggs.

Yes I believe they will get more pale as the cycle continues, but not by much. Once they begin their cycle again after a break, the vibrance starts over again.
