Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

i would love to see a thread about people with chickens confronted with bad weather , how they build, prepare their coops for such weather with pics of such . I know it's a job to do but many of us never see that kind of weather and would throughly enjoy the details , pics , action and suspence (hope that's not to much of a brash statement as it was not ment to be)

I know the snow you are getting is beautiful but you and your chickens are probably ready for it to go away .

Yeah its pretty cold and they were kinda mad when I took this because it just started raining. That was the beginning of our huge icestorm where we got like 1.5-2inches of ICE! then 5 inches of snow and now its snowing as we speak!

Oh and Thank you!

They got a bit of a break this week living in the garage with my call ducks. I had my coops winterized and stuff but no matter how you prepare for winter you never are ready for things like this.

Illia I want to see those, but I might of already if they were on the ABC forum.

They were on the ABC forum, which I don't think I'm allowed to link to. . . So, just go there and look for the photos on the 2010 National Show. His birds are the LF Silvers and Brown Reds. Plus that first blue cockerel. . . WOW the beard and muffs! Wish my boys had 'em that full.

Ok so when you posted that I was like I've seen those but I went back and looked because I just breezed through the bantams and the BBS and White LF but those are some NICE chickens he's got there! I'm having a hard time finding a BBS rooster that comes close to some of those on the forum. I was there but I guess I over looked them. All I did was to drool on everything buff. I want some sooo bad!

This is the best idea ever! I am picking up some of these tomorrow!

I have to ask, is that a maxi pad in the incubator? I had to do a double take...what is its purpose? I'm always looking for new tips to improve my hatches. Thanks!

Yes.

I've got a couple Wheatens and Blue Wheatens with bare patches where their muffs should be. Beards are fine though. The one time I introduced a bearded Polish cockerel, two, actually, in with my hens - Their beards were bare, and I mean BARE skin, just 2 days in. Luckily they grew them back as soon as I pulled them out.

Yeah Ameraucanas IMHO are likely to do this. Especially the bantams. I had bantams for about 3 years and no doing there was always one that had feathers picked out. I gave them the name "feather pickers". That was a trait I tried not to make worse. It can be just the birds mentality, boredom, or stress. If you think it is one of these things and it becomes a problem then mix Vick's Vapor Rub and Grap Kool-Aid together and rub it on the bare area and just keep applying until the feathers grow back and it should stop. For some reason it doesn't taste good to them. You could also try Vicks and chilli powder. Be sure they have plenty of space and try to keep a low stress enviorment.

This is just if it becomes a problem.

Thanks I will give this a try.

I have three BW Ameraucana Roosters and the two at the top have had their beards picked out. I've never tried to catch/hold them since they were moved out to the big coop, so don't know about trying to put any concoction on them...the oldest one is about one year old and the 2nd & 3rd are a couple months younger.
