Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Mine usually does that the first few hours. Just leave it running with no water in it until it comes down, mine's always down by morning.

That's good to hear.

This is my first attempt at hatching my own eggs... I'm trying not to panic before I even begin.

I love the look of my silvers (LF)...but never fell in love with their personality. Also, their color stays true when bred true. Just like Wheatens and Blue Wheatens. But no bird is perfect. Most breeders of Silver are striving for a smaller comb. My Silver Hens were the most flighty of ALL my Ameraucanas this summer. The Wheatens, Lavs, Buffs and Blacks have been the sweetest. It could be the just the Silvers I ended up with, I wouldn't rule them all out because of my experience. They are truly striking to look at. And, I don't see a whole lot of people breeding them.

I also have a 10 year old in 4-H (and 7 year old) and want them to show solid colored birds to get them used to "type" vs color. The Bantam Lav Ameraucanas are so dang cute...so are the Bantam Black Ams.

Yeah I was going to suggest the lavs since they're so friendly, but they are not officially recognized by APA or ABA yet, so that would probably not benefit kids ready to show this year. Also, and this is speaking from my large fowl experience only as I do not have the bantams, they still need a lot of work.

GOSH have I had a week. We had 2 inches of ice in an icestorm and I had a tree fall on my white pen and crushed my white rooster and a hen so backed to the drawing board. The tree crushed my fencing and now I have all kinds of chickens in my garage! Oh on top of that my computer is broke. I was stranded in my house for 3 days without lights! So I've been out of the Ameraucana loop

To the person that wants to start with bantam Ameraucanas. I would definatley go with BBS or any solid color. As a beginning breeder myself I like whites, bbs, and buffs. That is what I'm breeding/ going to breed. GOOD LUCK!

I just wanted to show off one of my chicks. They are 6 weeks old now. I really think of all my birds the Ameraucanas have the best personality.

How old are they when you can start telling the sex? This is my first breeding pair and my first chicks from the pair. So I am really new to this. But more and more I am realizing this breed and my polish are the ones I want to work with the most. The polish are flighty, but they're just so stinkin cute I cant stand it.

Yes, Gabby is my daughter. She loves the color of the Lavs, she thinks they look so cute. Are going to be admitted to ABA/APA in the near future?
She does like the black. The breeder we are talking will have some started Weaton & Blue Weatons. I am going to check on Black for her. She wants correct birds but temperments are a biggie, she spends tons of time with her chickens. She is not comfortable with aggressive roos so we only keep the nice ones.

There is some controversy about the club's position on whether or not to approach APA/ABA for recognition under any other name other than "lavender", i.e. self-blue, etc. I think the general consensus is that we want to move forward with recognition as soon as possible, but most do not want to rush the recognition at the expense of using the name preferred by the club. At least that's my understanding. Please visit the Ameraucana Breeder's Club website and forum for additional details. I think you can read as a visitor without being a member but in order to post you must be a member. I might be wrong about that, though.

Also our President is an active BYC'er...... "pips&peeps" so you can ask her too.
