How come the Lavenders have not made it in the 2010 APA book? I thought you had to have ten breeders to show Lavenders at a show to get them accepted.

I wish we had better hay here, but I just use it for next boxes. They pick through it and eat the seeds, but that's about it. Mine free range and get turnip greens and layer crumbles. They lay orange-yolked eggs most of the time. You'd think that would make the chicks more "yellow-ish"

They are lots of things that still need to be worked on in this variety:

type
eye color
feather quality
size

and some other issues like egg color and single combs and clean faces popping up still, which are easier to deal with.

There was a discussion in the past on the breed forum about diet and the influence it plays on the appearance of skin color in the foot pad region of newly hatched chicks. My chicks have all exhibited yellow-ish looking toes at hatch and none have truly yellow skin when I look at the foot pads now, when they are older. I have specifically been watching that because I thought the toes looked yellow in pics, too. My birds free range on lush grass and receive added greens like carrot peelings, collard greens from my garden, carrot tops, etc. There is no shortage of pigment in their diet.

The discussion I am mentioning also talked about whether it was wise to cull chicks at hatch due to yellow foot pads. It was an interesting read. Please visit our breed forum if you are interested.

To the person who asked what lavs look like in real life, I have posted lots of pics on this forum and NONE have ever been edited in any way shape or fashion beyond cropping the photo down to subject. Some pics show them more blue, gray, or even purple-y depending on the lighting. There are lots of pics of my birds in the auction link which I still have attached to my signature line for the time being. You can click on it and see my birds. They really look like that! I would describe it as a steel or pewter color. More gray than purple or lavender. The shade of color varies among the individuals, some being darker than others. I have one chick I'm growing out that is noticeably darker than it's coopmates, but it is still a shade of gray. Remember, this color is a relatively recent introduction in this breed and will continued to be refined over time by those who are working on it. Hope this helps.
