Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My blue wheatens look white to me when they hatch, just a hint of yellow. My line is from peachick. In the picture the ones on the far left and far white are from my Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas

Noo- that silver chick IS a buff! They hatch that way sometimes. I have some that are downright khaki, but they end up buff. Just one of those things. Don't put her in the EE pen! I must have missed your post earlier or I would have said something. Look at these from my hatch last month:

They all look identical now- even the leg color.

WOW! Thanks so much for filling me in!

I even sent a picture of that chick to Wayne and he didn't recognize it as a buff!

Ahhh- I was thinking if you told him it was "silver" he was picturing a chipmunk-y silver ameraucana chick. I went through the same thing last month- I was like- what the heck is this? But Jean set me straight on it. Crazy how they all look the same now.

Notice 2 are more a white color, far upper right and far upper left,

I hatched wheatens and blue wheaten

Could the more white ones be blue wheaten?

Yes, some have blobs of pink dyed on the Top of their head, I did this so I would know which ones came from which breeders stock..

Thanks all

Hi all.

I hope it's ok to post this guy here, he's what we call an Araucana in Australia but looks like your Ameraucana so I thought this would be the best place.

I'd be very happy if someone wants to guess on his breeding, he is pure breed but looks like the colors have been crossed (or he's badly colored). Here's what I've been told...

"He's a lav and will give you lav, blue, black, wheaten and blue wheaten babies." Hmmm..... he looks blue not lav too me. Doesn't look like the wheaten roos on here, his gold feathers appear almost to have blue lacing. Could he be S/s+ and that's leaking gold? Looking at the blue flights makes me think of birchen too. He has gold in his hackle, saddle and shoulder but none on his flights. I'll have to get some more pics but I'd love some opinions. He's around 18wo. Please excuse the scruffy appearance of both roos, they were in a bachelor pen till I bought them and are quite knocked around.

He isn't at all what I was expecting but he's a nice enough boy and should make pretty layers. I'm going to cross him with my assorted ladies and see what he produces.

I don't know exactly what your standard is in Austrailia, but I think it is supposed to be similar to the UK standard. If so, I think he should have a crest.

He does look blue to me also and he is carrying gold, not silver. If you want to make pure blue or black birds, get some hens of those colors and breed like crazy. Only keep the ones with very little leakage in the hackles every season and you should be able to remove the it from your flock.

You can't get wheaten and blue wheaten chicks out of him, he could be carrying the lavender gene though since it is recessive.

You CAN get Wheaten out of him, but only if you breed him to a Wheaten or to a hatchmate. Blue Wheaten x Lavender does indeed = the very cockerel you have there. There's no Birchen in him, he's basically half Wheaten, half E/E extended black (from the Lavender, a Lavender split, has a blue gene, has both gold genes, and, that's it.

Much agreed with Jean, he needs a crest, however I don't think the crests breed true with that size over there, so you're getting the few (like a Splash) without the crest. I've seen them before.
