Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

It's interesting that some of the recessive whites would be hard to seperate from a hatch of splash blues or lavs at hatch, but feather pure white. I believe their down color is a clue to genotype; but unfortunatly I lack the knowledge and experience to know why some are hatched nearly yellow, some more smokey, others blue with patterning on their heads and chests/bellies.

All their feathers are coming on solid white. I know on White Orpingtons are a smokey grey color and then they turn white.

I live in Hawaii and am interested in raising buff ameraucana's. Anyone have an idea or some leads for me as to who would send me chicks? I have been following this thread since last summer and I have been hanging around the Ameraucana breeders site off and on for a year but have not found anyone willing to ship to me. How in tarnation do people get Ameraucana's here in Hawaii? I mean, real ones. The feed store sells "ameraucana" chicks with a 6 chick minimum. lol I believe they are easter eggers. At first they told me they were Araucanas, then ameraucanas. So I guess they don't know the difference.

Any info or advice would be appreciated!

I think you better take the splash and put it in with the ee's

Here she is. Do you see any DQ's or reasons to remove her from my breeding pen? Thanks for the input.

Thanks, Ms. Fluffy Puffy, they look adorable. I wish mine would stay still long enough for me to snap a clear picture (or not poop when they do stay still). Three of mine are already growing out some tail feathers but the darker, smokier one is not.

Funny you should mention that . . Here is the silver chick you told me would feather in buff. He has the best buff coloring of my rooster chicks

I know! It's fun to watch them change though. I have a bunch more of Ramey's eggs due this weekend seen as how I got all boys last time. And have a few eggs coming from Jean too

I'm glad I got started with this color - and its nice to see other people with them too.

Speaking of buffs, I have one buff that was a packing peanut from Blehm's. It's the only buff I have. I don't know yet if it is a roo or pullet.

Is there another variety of ameraucana that I would be able to cross this one with and still come up with something worthwhile? If not, if it's a pullet, I will just put her in the layer pen, or perhaps use "it" with my marans to make olive eggers.

You could cross your buffs back to wheatens to improve the buff line. The F1 would be a split and you would breed it back to the buff....
