Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Since you looked at thee comb....what kind of comb is that? It looks like a rosecomb in a couple of the pictures.

Walt

I've seen that in some lavender splits, where it's still a pea comb, it's just funky and narrow at the top...

A pea comb should have three rows, but I can't really see the comb in these pics. from a distance it looks like a rosecomb.......wondering if it was just me.

Ok, after seeing the new pictures what do you think? Is a pea comb ok for an Ameraucana? I've thought all along I've had a pure Ameraucana, not an EE. ? hmm...

Yeah, a judge told me that with everybody breeding the combs down so they aren't all big and ugly in the males, they've been essentially lost in the females, and it really bothers him. I have one black LF pullet that I'm growing out that has a really wide comb for a female, with three distinct rows. I'm showing her in 2 weeks, so we'll see....she has a super big beard and muffs too.

It would be nice if Ameraucanas had combs like Brahmas - They usually have some very nice combs, even on the girls. My Blue Partridge pullet has a much better comb than any pullet or hen I've had in Ameraucanas, Araucanas, or Easter Eggers.

The downside is that with the nice comb comes big wattles. (in males)

My B/B/S girls also have respectable 3 row combs - so much so that even extremely experienced Ameraucana breeders pegged my splash pullet as a boy! (But I have seen her lay an egg so I KNOW she's a she.) And my boys have large but not overly huge combs so in the comb department, I believe I'm set.

Mine also have very full muffs and beards so I wonder if there is some connection between the two.

CloverLeaf and Illia...
Are either of you going to be at Stevenson next week? I'd enjoy seeing some of your birds if you're showing them.

And... I have a general question. I have an EE, the one in my avatar. I bought her from what I know now was a poor source after she'd already started laying. The feathers on her back are very sparse, but I thought that was probably just the way it was supposed to be. When I saw this pic today it made me realize I was just being ignorant. Poor thing looks like a drowned rat after three drops of rain hits her! Is this at all common? I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts.

Nope. Don't think I'll be hitting any shows for a while.

I don't see what's wrong with the hen in the photo though? You'd have to show me the wet bird to explain better.

Oh yes, I don't miss that show if I can possibly help it.

I'll have mostly bantams there, except for the one LF black pullet I was talking about. It's the Western District meet for the ABC!!!

I'll be at the club table most of the time, come say HI!!!
