Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Black x Wheaten create some very nice mimicks of Brown-Red. Check out the Lav Wheaten project birds, there's photos of them somewhere around here.

Wheaten Am x Wheaten Marans = Light Wheatens like the Ameraucana side and dark/normal Wheatens like the Marans side. It's interesting really being that Marans have a Wheaten color like most others, while most Ameraucanas don't, and crossing the two doesn't make an in between or dominance or anything, you just get half and half of each.

This is the blue wheaten maran x wheaten ameraucana cross (from Illia) when she was 7 weeks. She is one of my fav pullets of all time and should be laying soon. Cant wait. She is beautiful.

The wheaten x black ameraucanas that I have hatched last year were a strange mix of black and burnt okra color as chicks. In some light the chicks looked almost purple!! I did not keep any to see how they turned out.

No recent pics, but she looks like an blue wheaten ameraucana complete with beard and muffs, BUT with feathered legs. Sweet sweet bird and very vigorous.

It's early and I haven't had my cup of coffee, if you are planning on breeding ameraucana's don't out cross to a marans, unless you want an olive egger. Not only that, feathered legs, wrong comb, leg color, not to mention body image. It will take many many years to flush out all the incorrect genes. ok going to drink coffee now

BTW if you want to see the mock brown reds (what happens when you cross wheaten with a black or a Lavender) they are on my Lav project page.

I have an EE pen, I will put them in there, not my breeding pens... Just for fun.

I just put 2 marans hens in my BW wheaten coop so I knew the dark eggs would be BW OEs. Vice versa for putting my cull BW hens in the marans pen. I love the look of the BW OEs. So far the girls are perfectly in between colors of the marans and ams.

The discussion was just about colors and the difference of Wheaten in Marans vs Ameraucanas, not breeding for an Ameraucana project.
