Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

FYI - I am donating a couple of chocolate orpington chicks to the Ameraucana Breeders Club at the Indy show. There will either be a silent auction or a raffle, specifics are still to be determined.

There will also be a couple of these chicks donated to the United Orpington Club by a friend of mine and she will also be donating a started pair of black orpingtons. These are well known West Coast lines.

Come by the ABC and the UOC tables and check them out.

You can tell she has that nice dark lacing on her feathers that most blue Ams lack.

Hey Muggsmagee!!

Actually I bought her and a sister to breed with the Lav AM's that hatched from your eggs. Back in Feb you sent me 2 lav am eggs, in a variety auction. They both hatched, A Cockerel and A pullet!! The Girl is very pretty. The boy is a bit rough.

Someday I am hoping to breed them to some nice blacks and see what I get. The little girl in my pic (her sister died) was sold to me as black....and they did look black as chicks. Not sure if breeding a blue to my Lavs will work the same or not??

The boys tend to show their faults best!

You should stick with blacks to breed Lavs to to improve type. But if this is merely for your backyard and as pets, go for it! There are a few breeders of nice looking blacks here on BYC and on the ABC member list that can send you eggs if you'd like to breed your Lavs to improve type, etc. I will be putting my blacks together in late Winter to continue to build a solid foundation for my Lav projects. We've been breeding for splits, but keep the splits separate from the pure blacks.

Then I will be looking for more hatching eggs this spring. Not that I have a grand plan in mind, but seems like doing it right would be best. Especially with all the effort so many are putting into getting the lavs to SQ.

And I really do get a huge rush out of hatching!!

Hi! This is just a generic thinking-out-loud question about breeding blue to lav (cause of AZBootsie situation), from someone that knows very little.
If you had a fabulous blue hen and no blacks, why not breed the lav to blue and only keep/use* the black chicks from the hatch? They would be 'black split to lav', wouldn't they?
Is there some reason *not to* that I am missing?

*The blue chicks from the hatch would be split to lav also, but you wouldn't have to use those for breeding at all.

the blue and blacks are splits,
when u breed black split to black split u get light colored chick it lavender
with blue split to blue split it could be lavender or spalsh

It's perfectly fine to do so as long as you do NOT use the blues from the F1 batch.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, just use the black F1 chicks for Lav project. I thought there must be something *else* going on that I was missing. I don't have any lavs, so it isn't an issue --- just trying to understand a little more.

Good to know. I am having issues with my orps- just not happy with the lavs type, but my blues are sooooo lovely.
