Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Well I am really happy with what I am seeing on this thread anyway. Not asking everybody that raises lavenders to be so serious about them- that would be ridiculous. But its nice to see more people getting started. I hadn't intended on doing that much myself- just a little project- until I fell in love with thier temperment.

Walt,

I have already had several conversations with Sam regarding the lavender birds. The problem at this point is the term lavender. The APA is willing to consider it with our application for admission, but the ABA will not discuss it and one member of the Board has even gone so far as to call the ameraucana breeders "nut jobs" regarding the issue.

ETA:

It is my opinion that we are fortunate that the APA recognizes both large fowl and bantam varieties.........

And, the reason we didn't go for acceptance yet was that we didn't want to have the same thing happen that happened with the marans to happen with us. Just a bit more time to tweek our results.

The APA is trying to work with the ABA so that our Standards are consistent, so the term lavender may be a problem. I hope the board member you refer to was not an APA board member. It is wise to take the time and be sure that the variety is ready for qualifying. When you get to that point, let me know. Our committee has had conflicts with the ABA before and have usually been able to work them out. The term lavender will be a problem with the some in the APA too, but "Self blue" can be used as it just was with the Silkies. I know that is not the term you want to use, but that would make it relatively easy to get into the APA SOP as long as the birds entered in the qualifying meet are of good quality. Currently there are no chickens in the ABA or APA Standards with the description "Lavender". Self blue has been used by both clubs (ABA/APA). Lavender is a fairly new description and most of the self blue birds were qualified before the term lavender was ever used.

Let me know when you are ready.

Our members will not budge on the name lavender. We were thinking that since self blue description is already in the standard we would use our term lavender for the color in the Ameraucana section and refer to the self blue color description on page so and so.

This has been done for several different varieties of birds and we thought it would work for us too. They will have to add an new variety anyway, so there is no additional work to be done to do it that way.

ETA: It was an ABA person. Don't worry, I called him out for it in the Poultry Press.

I personally have worked hard re introducing black to my lav and have gotten some real nice birds from others to help with the issues they have. I would like to see them accepted also even though I dont show birds. I think them and the BW are just awesome

Hi Mike-
No I didn't get mine from you. Mine are all from Harry Shaffer, Crystalcreek's Smith birds, and the retired Garner's blacks. I think we were going to swap a few months back but we had pretty similar birds so that didn't happen. Waiting on Diane's girls to start laying so I can get some eggs that are from under your split roo.

My daughter is having major surgery in the spring, and I will be caring for her during recovery for a long time so I won't be able to hatch much then. I hate having chicks in the house all winter, but you gotta do what you gotta do!

If it is who I think it was, it probably didn't make an impression, but at least you got your position out in front of everyone.

Other the Guinea fowl what other birds are called lavender? The Guinea fowl lavender is a whole different color than the AM's.

What about Lav Orps?? I have no idea if they are an accepted variety or not, but that is what I have seen people on here call them.
