Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

pips&peeps :

Unless the slate legged bird is carrying one copy of the yellow skin gene. What you said applies to pure birds.

yes sorry

And some of the leg color genes are sex linked too, so the hen couldnt be split right?

I'm trying so hard to keep up with all the breeding/genetic terms and don't always succeed! If there is a book I might purchase, I hope someone will recommend it here. Can you tell me again what "split" means?

I love this thread and BYC. Here I was just posting proud mama pics of my new hatchlings, and I now I am inadvertently getting a lesson in genetics. We learn more by accident than design.

So it turns out that "Pumpkin" not "Speckles" is the momma, and Old Blue was the daddy. Good to know, but we love the little cutie the same either way.

So how do you get green legs if not from slate crossed with yellow? Just curious.

I will be happy with whatever I get from those eggs

. Did you keep the black ones? They could be split for Lav or carrying the cuckoo gene. I saw the pic of the little Lav one..

thanks and Best of Luck on the next hatch. If you have anymore eggs from the Lav hen you want to sell let me know.

I kept one black one, even though it is single combed- it may be a dark layer if its a girl. I think the ones I sent you have more laid by the lavs. My eggs were mostly from the splits. But Genelda had some OE eggs in her bunch that are due on New Years. I'll let ya know how hers come out- I think she said 10 out of 10 developing

If we don't get at least a couple lavs in these eggs I will keep the project roo in there til we all get some.

At 5 weeks, I'm fairly confident Kelly is female

But I'm not so confident that Jean isn't Gene ....

Although this picture helps to reassure me. In person, Jean's comb is VERY well defined with 3 rows ....
