Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Beautiful birds! I do love the barred bird which I guess is a rooster? Is it the only barred one you have right now? Are you finding the hens lay a nice blue eggs? This is probably a dumb question but why can you not get slate colored legs on a barred colored chicken? Do you or would you sell hatching eggs?

I would say you have done a nice job on your yard candy. I like the one you are showing in the picture!

Yep- the roo is the barred one, and he's split for lavender. Egg color is good- but I won't know what the cuckoo chicks are laying for some time. I expect it to be about the same as these:

The blue-er ones are from the lavenders, the one black split is laying the big green ones. I'm just happy to be getting bigger eggs this generation

hmmm not sure what to do...

I am thinking of placing an order of chicks from John Blehm, Chick Hatchery.
There is a 25 chick minimum.
I really want to add wheaten to my projects (only was able to hatch one wheaten pullet from shipped eggs). But there is a 10 chick limit. So I have to come up with 15 more chicks to add to that order. Since I have blue/black/splash ameraucanas already I am thinking of keeping a John Blehm line of blacks that I can use to improve my gene pool. But like I said I already have a good batch of those so not sure that I need a whole 15.
He has lavender but I just don't think I even want to get into lavender. Maybe silver? Or I could just choose..."hatchery choice" and see what I get. Or maybe I should just stick with black and wheaten. I am only starting out so don't want to get too crazy.
Just not sure what to do. Maybe I should just stick to black and get some experience with that before I get into other colors.
Any suggestions? Sigh... not sure what to do. I need a chicken counselor! lol

The limit of 10 on Wheatens is frustrating. Michigan to Hawaii is a LONG trip. You are very likely going to need LOTS of extras. That said, I am also just getting started and the best advice I've been given - keep it simple. Stick with one or MAYBE two varieties and focus on those. (Definitely don't order the Chanteclers. Those are a Canadian breed - bred for cold weather. Hawaii would likely be hard on them!

Good luck!!!

This really is a sickness isn't it?
My brain totally justifies all kinds of chickens. I will spare you all my goofy logic. lol Just deleted most of my post..

I need another line of blacks besides just one line from one breeder right? Right? Or not really?

yeah.. not super interested in Chantecler. I am totally set on ameraucanas and marans. Is trying to do two colors of ameraucanas too much to take on right at first?

Order the 10 Wheatens, then order 15 Blacks. Pick the best out of them all, cull the rest.

Blacks are always good to have, because you can work with many other colors using them. You can develop a BBS line, a Lavender line and a Chocolate line, all by using good blacks!

Think about it.

I guess you could just consider the blacks expensive packing peanuts and hope for the best. You've already got blacks. A few more just gives you more options.

Just, have you seen the awesome breeding pens we are building? I need more chickens!!!

Also, Blacks and Blues tend to have the best type. Not always but most of the time

Wouldn't mind getting some new blood in the blacks either, but I haven't been able to open the order form to see what's available
