Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have a white ameraucana coming up on a year old, she has not started laying. She is the only ameraucana in my flock of seven, all others are laying. I have heard the ameraucanas to be late starters, but this seems extreme. Does this seem uncommonly late?

I have a tiny Silver Ameraucana turning 1 in March who isn't laying yet, either. I am waiting for some tiny blue eggs from her!

I wanted to quote both of you but only one came up.... I have 2 Lav who will be 1 in May and they just started laying 2 weeks ago....so no, 1 year old isn't usually late....but it sure is later than I wanted to wait.

My experience has been that if a pullet hits point of lay at the same time that daylight hours are decreasing, she might wait until the following spring to begin laying. In those instances, the timing of first egg has more to do with increasing daylight hours rather than hold old the pullet is.

A similar phenomenom occurs in horses, and broodmares are routinely placed under lights in December, to trick them into cycling in early February so foals are born as close to January 1 as possible. Otherwise, the mares would be in "anestrus" and not cycle or have erratic cycles.

You can place your pullets under lights, but I don't know if it's worth the cost of electricity for a few weeks earlier egg production.

CRYSTAL CREEK that is good information to have . It seems to me that both my Ameraucanas and Marans have very thick feathering and need additional protein in their diet because of that. Whereas the NNs who have thin feathering do not seem to need as much.

So far at least one chick hatched under my broody - I heard it and saw the broken shell when I went to open up the coop this morning! I'll try to get a picture later today.

My EE Smokey has hatched out one of her adopted AM eggs - how long before I will be able to guess it's sex?
