I recently discussed this with a judge on the phone who had a hypothetical question: If an ameraucana laid a brown egg in front of him, would that be a DQ??? I said yes, but in my opinion if the egg was green, then no, because the bird was still carrying the blue egg gene.

Has anyone worked on creating a project Barred Ameraucana for fun? Though I know it couldn't be considered an Ameraucana due to the color, but I was wondering if anyone has tried to create one with all the Ameraucana standards, with the exception of the feathering... If so I'd love to see pics

I think someone is working on it as project Barred Ameraucanas. Not sure who but if you look at some of the EE barred crosses, they are beautiful!

In due time, someone will have a few projects that you can continue working eliminating the green colored eggs and focus on the standards.

I have seen some that are more Cuckoo barred that the good old Barred Rock pattern. Getting a true Barred pattern is difficult but never impossible.

HappyMt is working on cuckoo lavenders. Leg color is a possible problem with cuckoo or barring. But she is not having that problem.... she has pics on here not too far back either. They are standing in a plant pot.

In the marans breed, if the bird cannot lay a certain number of eggs that are at least a 4 on the color chart then the French do not even consider them a marans. The egg color is one of the unique things about marans.
I think that if an ameraucana does not at least carry the blue egg gene.....should we really even consider it an Ameraucana? Egg color is one of the unique things about this breed. I mean if an Ameruacana has the wrong color legs it does not get the honor of being called an ameraucana.

And I have been a member of the ameraucana breeders club for.......1 week. lol!
So my opinion means nothing actually...

I saw those pics HappyMTN posted, that's actually what gave me the idea of a barred ameraucana! I'm pretty new to chickens, but once I have a year or two of experience under my belt, I hope to start a project pen. And I think the barred ameraucana might be the task for me, I know I'll never get it to ameraucana standards, but as long as beautiful Easter Eggers are created I'll be satisfied

Barred EE are easy.... Barred or cuckoo Ameraucanas.... not so much.

With EE you don't have to worry about breeding out what you cross to make the barring. Barred EE.... Barred Rock ROO x EE pullet/Hens Solid blue and black would be my first choice. All the chicks would be barred. Then you have to work on egg color if you want to, or not....

I have two Barred EE pullets. They lay a nice light green egg. They are in with my Marans Roo so I will have sex link Olive Eggers.

Well I know these questions should be asked in genetics, where I'm sure I'll end up when I actually start a project bird. But what would you suggest I begin with when striving for a barred ameraucana?

And wouldn't ameraucanas that dont meet standards be considered Easter eggers (thats just what I assumed)?
