Something no one mentioned yet is that because the Lav coloring is recessive it is also a poor feathering gene if you breed lav over lav too many times. Another thing I learned recently is that you will want to make sure that your roo or hens aren't leaking any bronze since that is common and hard to get rid of. I had to cull a roo-- well, he was aggressive so that made it easy, because he had bronze. If your roo has bronze its hard to get rid of. I thought about the blue splits and decided that it might be best to go with the blacks. I do love splash though....

I had an young roo that I bought when I got these chicks. I didn't get a clear look at him cause I was not allowed to go back to where the birds were kept and was in my dog crate. When I got him home and out in the light I saw the bronze in this hackle, saddle and upper wing area. I rehomed him.

These are the 7 lavender Ameraucanas I hatched on the weekend including 2 that were stuck and I do mean STUCK tight. Hard as rocks when I started to remove the shell. It was a very stressful hatch, to say the least. I can't believe the sticky ones actually made it. I literally had to soak them to get the shell off. Eyes sealed shut. Heads glued down. Legs, wings, they were a mess. One still has a glued wing but I just couldn't bring myself to inflict anymore misery on him. They had pipped days earlier but made no progress. I was getting ready to clean the incubator and heard peeping so I figured, nothing to lose at this point and decided to remove the shell. Was putting that poor now nearly drowned chick back into the incubator to warm up and dry off when the other one started to scream! Oy. 36 hours later, both appear to be hanging in there - even if they aren't quite fluffy yet.

Set 23 eggs. I put 16 in lockdown. 3 of those proved to be clear. Only 7 chicks hatched. I used a Hovabator Genesis for hatching. Filled both trays. Humidity read over 65%. I never imagined the chicks would stick in those conditions but they were stuck tight. I incubate in a Brinsea Octagon with humidity pump for the first 18 days because it controls the low humidity so well. I was hatching in the Hovabator because of improved headroom but after this fiasco, I think I'll stick with the Brinsea!! Dang. Anyway, I have 7 and I'm thankful for those.

Jean I have a question about Splash Wheaten...is this a project color...I noticed its not a listed color on the ACB or APA that I can find?? Learning something new everyday!! It has been a topic on BYC and I am trying to figure it all out. I have Blue Wheatens...was lucky enough to get some Gary Ramey hens recently and actually get to chat with him regular...I sent him a question but have not heard back and inquiring minds wanna know NOW!! LOL ...THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Wanted to add it was a discussion on FB which this particular post was quoted because someone said my BW was a splash and I had never heard of one...I only have read up on the breed standard using the APA and ABC info but I know other project colors exist!! I did go and check..all mine have the touch of blue!

Ok I don't have a picture of a splash wheaten. Like with BBS, splash and black are by products of Blues. I don't think splash is an APA approved color it just happens.... a good think really. I like what you can get from splashes, 100% blue if crossed with blacks. I know there are pictures on this thread of a splash wheaten.... try a search for splash wheaten. I don't know if they would all be white. Splash typically, as I have seen in solid splashes have SPLASHES of color so that may be the case with Splash Wheatens.

Cool! I felt like an idiot since I did all sorts of homework on Blue Wheatens before I bought mine to be sure I got good birds true to type then I was asked if my one gal was a splash...I was like no she is a wheaten then posted a pic of a splash(B/B/S type) and she sent me links to this info...duh moment because I have studied the APA standard and its what is on the ABC site also!! Confusing 24 hours for me! And my one gal is very fair...but has just a teeny hint of blue in the wing! Oh well!

Here is a pic of my 9 week old Ameraucana I am thinking it is a rooster what do you think? I can not have roosters so I am going to be bummed be cause it is my favorite.
