Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have a question about blue/black Ameraucana's. I purchased some chicks this spring and parents appeared to have beards and full muffs. The birds are March models and still have not feathered out the beard/muffs. My Wheatens are already starting and they are much younger. Will these blue/black Ameraucanas possibly beardless when grown? I HOPE at least the eggs are BLUE. I did not purchase these birds for breeding just eggs so I hope I am not disappointed.

I will breed my Wheatens/Blue Wheaten birds. They are so beautiful "inside and out" Peachick Ameraucana's are so NICE!

Thanks John, that would be great! I don't want to get too overwhelmed, taking on too many varieties, but I figure it can't hurt to pick up an extra cockerel or two especially if they are well bred and local

Just curious.... what do you guys feed your breeder birds? Do feed higher protein, vitamins, game feed?

I mix a 30% game bird feed in with layer pellets. I also give everyone a scoop of black oil sunflower seeds and chopped boiled liver. I feed lots of greens and fruit from the garden or yard everyday. I cannot free range my birds either so I try to bring the free range to them. lol

They are freakin awesome!!! Seriously... I had no idea there would be such a difference. Cannot express how happy I am to have them!
I ended up with 18 blacks and 8 wheaten.

Mine are bantams... 16 Lavender and 15 Silvers!!!

I didn't say anything before because I ordered very, very late, and John said he could send them "only if he had a good hatch." So I didn't know if I would get them at all until I got the e-mail saying they were on their way. We were just delighted when all arrived in great condition this morning!!!

You can use Vetwrap to make those shoes too.  That will not stick to their feet either.  you can use a pipe cleaner and make a drawing of the foot and bend the pipe cleaner to fit the foot and use the vet wrap to hold it in place.

try the pipe cleaner and vet wrap if she needs more
time in shoes
Her one foot is pretty straight now. The other foot I had to
put a shoe back on still curly but getting better. I can't
believe this works. I am SO happy. I am not going
to breed her but am keeping her as a pet. I am so
attached to her now.

If you had to call this a boy or a girl, what would you call it? It's a 9 week old Lavender and I've stressed to this bird time and again that it's gender is GIRL, there's another who has no bump whatsoever and no redness that I'm sure is a girl, then there's one with an obvious comb. This one is confusing me a bit and I think it might be boy?

If I had to call it, I would call it a girl. The comb just isn't prominent or wide enough to make me think boy. But this breed is known for keeping people guessing, and reading various posts here it seems the lavender project colors in particular are good at making people wonder right up to the POL (or crow) regardless of which breed they are.
