Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I spent the past couple days taking a look at my gals because one BYCer recently asked if their lav was a hen or roo based on the red comb. Lots of folks mentioned that it wouldn't be that red if it was a hen and then talked about fretting and its meaning. I don't know if this is pertinent, or just where my limited knowledge overlaps coincidence, but ALL my black Ams have very red combs and nares/cere. My lavs ARE lighter but still pretty red. And they are definitely laying eggs so no question as to whether or not they are cross-dressing. So, this could either mean that reading a comb for its redness is wishy-washy or something is wrong with my girls. I tried looking up if there might be something wrong with my girls, thinking that had to be it and not that the red comb was iffy, but didn't find anything. Are black Ams combs known to be brighter, so my experiences with them, and just the two lavs, are confusing me? I told the other BYCer that their bird looked just like my hen. Now I wonder if I didn't give them an opinion that was better kept in my pocket.

No- all laying hens should have red combs. (a few breeds are exceptions, obviously) They were talking about a juvenile birds, which would typically not have a red comb at a young age unless it is a roo.

In showing is eye color a dq or just lost points? And does eye color change as they age?
I'm a newbie too, but just got my Standard in the other day, so I will attempt to answer this!

Under both Ameraucanas and Bantam Ameraucanas the disqualifications are "Presence of ear tufts, absence of beard and muffs, yellow soles of foot or toes." There is also reference to a "General Disqualifications" section. That is a few pages, so I won't quote the whole thing, but under eyes it only lists two things. "1. Blind in both. 2. Irregular pupil indicating leucosis."

So, from what I have found, I would say that eye color is not a disqualification. (OK experts... did I get it right?)

As far as eye color changing... I don't know! We'll have to wait for the experts on that one.

Oh.. just found one more tidbit!

On the scale of points, eyes are worth a total of 4 points out of 100. They can get up to 2 points for shape and 2 points for color.

I am loving my new book!
