Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

It does look like 3 blacks and a blue, at least right now. There is no way to sex them on appearance. They will have you guessing for months!!!!! The blue should not be used for breeding. You want to improve, not introduce faults/DQ's.

Why should the blues not be used for breeding? Is blue (or any color dilution) a fault? Does the dilution gene act in birds the way it does in dogs? Can they develop poor quality feathers just by virtue of being dilutes?

These birds are not for show...just pets/food...I'm just curious.

TIA!

i love your new babies! I would go ahead and cull (sell or give away) the feathered one as an EE. no reason to keep feeding it :) You have some real lovelies there.

thanks! (if you were talking about mine

) they are just pets so i will keep her even if she is defective-LOL! I guess i should pm the breeder & let her know that the feathered shanks showed up though...

Her blue has feathered legs, which is a no-no for Ameracaunas... that's why it should not be a breeder. For beautiful blue eggs, it will be just fine.

As for splash, I don't have a splash Am, but I do have a splash Cuckoo Marans. The splash babies are a very pale yellow/white.

You can compare his color to his Blue Copper Marans brother:

(I do realize this is an Ameraucana thread, and I DO have Ameraucanas! Mine are just all black, and that's not very helpful when you need some color examples...)

Okay thanks for posting these pix! So in chicks, yellow turns white as they age? Looking at the blue i see where everyone is saying i have only one blue...but it is strange because the other 2 are much lighter than the black one...even the primary wing feathers coming in are distinctly grey...not black.

Anybody have a pic of a splash chick? Do they look really light from the beginning?
Here are pictures of my splash chick. She's still only about 5 weeks old, but you can see her baby color and now her feathers. She's a love and has more "splashes" on her now than the picture actually shows. :)

My broody lav Ameraucana hatched out a few blue wheaten/black Ameraucanas that appear brown. Will they stay brown as adults? Does anyone have these as adults that could post a pic or 2? Thanks!
No way to tell what color they will end up being. Most breeders don't cross their colors unless doing a specific genetic project.

Basel, I think that is a cockerel.

Well hopefully not, as she was vent sexed by an expert twice as a day old chick [via a breeder who's used him for many years with great accuracy]. Of course, there is always a chance a mistake was made. :) We'll see though I guess. What specifically are you looking at?

For a pet she is good! No worries, talking about breeding for SOP. Yes the dilution of the gene creates problems like it does for dogs etc............It seem so to be the self-blue/Lavender birds that get the problems. Blue Ameraucanas have a pattern gene for lacing. It seems they don't have the same challenges.
