Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Your chicks are in there crazy acting, vulture phase. They will be fine. I don't let my daughter hold them until they settle down. Once they get older they will be friendly and beautiful. The meal worms will make them love you!!!!!!!!!!

Aso try some tiny bit of loaf bread dropped in front of them. When they eat a bit you can try hand feeding. Mine are at the spazz time too but are beginning to warm up to me. Gloria Jean

I have five and they were a year old in April. They have never been friendly. I used to set on a bucket in their aviary and feed them bred. Only two of the five would ever take it from my hand, and forget about touching one. I let them free range every third day and they will barely go out the door if I'm standing near. My BCM's will mug me for the bread and have no problem stepping on my feet to get out of the door.

My BCM's are very friendly and have been since a very young age.

Well I went out to the coop with a bowl of meal worms and oh my goodness! They really came running once they figured out I had something yummy.

Not a one would let me pick him/her up, but at least progress has been made. A few hung around my feet for a few minutes after the worms were gone.

I think this will work!

On a different note, I caught my older chicks guarding the water. It's 97 outside today and although our coop is open air, it's hot out there. I put 2 more waters out in other sections of the coop.

If you can brood your chicks at face level, they won't be as flighty.
Never had problems with my many ameraucanas, but have heard the silvers referred to as leghorns on crack.

Just for the record.... I don't find my leghorns to be flight.... the guinea on the other hand are CRAZY WILD!

My Ams don't seem to be flighty either. My lav pullets from Amy will just come right up to me and let me pet them... so do my BCM.... My Cuckoo Marans are on the other side of the coop when I go in to feed and water.

Well I brought home some mealies tonight & OMG they went crazy. There was a lot of.flapping & sqwaking but they were.mostly fighting over the worms. They could not eat if I was holding them but they'd snag them right out of my hand

Has anybody ever used superworms? They were huge. I guess I'm gonna have to try & raise some kind of.worms for them we went.thru $5 worth in about 10 minutes and the big birds didn't get.any.

They are easy to raise. There is a thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/492636/mealworm-farming#post_6256559
