Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

so wheaten is recessive? A wheaten crossed with a blue (NOT wheaten) will produce blues? that carry the wheaten gene?

sorry i know just enuf about genetics to be dangerous-LOL!
Wheaten Genetics

Here is a bit of info on how the wheaten gene works....
Wheaten x Wheaten = All Wheaten
Wheaten x Blue Wheaten = 1/2 Wheaten and 1/2 Blue Wheaten
Blue Wheaten x Blue Wheaten = 1/2 Blue Wheaten, 1/4 Wheaten and 1/4 Splash
Wheaten.
Wheaten x Splash Wheaten = All Blue Wheaten
Blue Wheaten x Splash Wheaten = 1/2 Splash Wheaten and 1/2 Blue Wheaten
Splash Wheaten x Splash Wheaten = All Splash Wheaten

I have tried to get genetics... but I am not there yet. I can only take bites at a time.

Here is my new rooster. I traded in my aggressive hatchery Orp (& a few bucks

) and got this guy.

I think he is an Ameraucana, not an EE, but I can't remember all the rules-lol! I know I can count on the experts here to tell me for sure. BTW, he does have slate legs though you can't see them in the pic. Also, can you confirm his color? Wheaten, right?

A wheaten crossed with a Blue would give you 50/50 blue and black, but all would carry one copy of wheaten that is not expressed.

You can't count on the color of the bird to get only extended black (E/E) genes in the blue, black and splash lines. Alot of the birds carry birchen (E^R) which would indicate they are E/E^R. So you would not get only blue and black offspring from the cross.

Then it would take several generations to get back to wheaten or blue. You would have a whole mess of different colors popping up in the next generation of offspring.

Go to the Kip calculator and see. There is no way to know what genes are hiding under the color we see.

I use the calculator often as I don't understand genetics.

This is basically 1/2 the offspring will have the Wheaten look and half of those would be blue and black if you used one blue and one black from the above. 1/2 will be solid color. I didn't say it would be easy and I did say not the best route to go either. About 1/2 of the wheatens you could not use.

And remember some of the birds that carry gold and silver will not display it in the feather pattern, especially the females.

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I looked at the pic's on Ameraucana Scrapbook. The bottom of your picture is so dark he could be Wheaton, Blue Wheaton or Brown Red . Check out this site. http://www.ameraucana.org/scrapbook.html

Thanks! & more importantly he seems really sweet so far.

I checked the link & he is definitely a wheaten- even has the white fluff at the base of the tail. Sorry the pic isn't better (cell phone). I'll get more once I can have him out & about in a month or so.
