We are trying, and that's why those of us that ARE trying to breed true and keep the traits that make an Ameraucana an Ameraucana get ticked when people that AREN'T breeding true still call their birds Ameraucanas. One of my dogs has a pure Border Collie mom and a pure Heeler dad...she's not a "border collie" any more, she's a border collie MIX, or a heeler MIX.

There are plenty people going for a strong blue egg. A lot of Araucana and Ameraucana breeders are doing this. That's the point of a lot of discussion here; the difference between people ignorantly breeding EE's and people having the true breeds.

I have more experience breeding "purebred" horses, dogs, and cats. With horses, for example, every breed sets its own requirements for what it takes to qualify the animal to be accepted as one of the breed. "Dutch Warmbloods", for example, have to be named a certain way and the stallion owner has to pay a specific fee to the society for EVERY mare it covers in order for the foal to qualify. If that fee isn't paid, even with both parents registered, the foal CANNOT be called "Dutch Warmblood". Canadian Warmbloods allow entry to their book with certain approved Thoroughbreds as parents. (They are still building their book.) Some breeds allow entry through competitive results. Thoroughbreds cannot be registered if AI is used. They only allow live cover. Quarter horses have color (or rather lack of color) requirements. However, in order to enforce it, papers are issued that certify the animal as "pure" and part of the breed. Some even have DNA requirements now. Dogs and cats work the same way.

My point is, breeds can set whatever criteria they want when building their breed. I suspect the BIGGEST problem for the Ameraucana folks right now is the fact that proof of registration is not provided or required. As far as I know, there are no chickens that are "registered". I think it will be all but impossible to stop this squabbling without it.

I've been noticing more that a lot of "pure" Ameraucana's don't even have combs anymore, let alone a correct pea comb. I kept two hens with high tail-sets for my breeding program this year, simply because *they do*.

I just always assumed ours were "mutt" EE's.

"US Ameraucana – Beards and muffs (NO lethal gene), with tail feathers, blue eggs, blue legs and white skin."

The first bird pictured appears to have all of these, or is on his way to.
Maybe his legs aren't blue enough, showing a cross of some kind?
I dunno...

i agree with the dog metaphor above. chicken breeds are not a breed unless they are a breed. they are mixes. mutts are when you don't know what they are. mixes are when you know. my dog Zeke is either a poodle mix, a spaniel mix, or a full bred spanish water dog. I don't have a clue,as he was a rescue dog that was stray first so i refer to him as a "mutt". He may very well not be a "mutt" but that is what I call him... because i don't know. it doesnt make him any less of dog. but it would make him more acceptable to breed if i did know and he was full bred - just by breeder standards.

the sad thing about the internet, is you never know the person who is "attacking" your "ameraucana"'s intentions... because the internet is not really a good way to convey tone of voice. i've gotten into trouble with even my own family members because they mistake silly posts on facebook as me being "malicious" or trying to stir up arguements. just because they read into words WAY too much. seems like that is a lot of what is going on here...

you have to understand that not everyone is out to "get you" or to criticize. the people posting that "THAT ISNT a REAL Ameraucana!!!" are not out to get you. they just want you to know what you have. That way, someone else who is looking into getting one of the breed doesnt end up getting tricked. I can understand that it might feel like they are ganging up on the EE people. But it is easier to keep calling something something when you are told initially that it is that something.

and because i'm a devil's advocate i'll say this: what about wyandotte? - i've been calling the breed "wy-an-dote". but now i'm getting from people that it is "wy-an-dot". i don't know how it's really said... but whichever way it is i would at least be willing to call it that than get all huffy on the person correcting me and post a big thread about it on here about how rude they are for criticizing me!
