Well, look at 4H's and County Fairs. . . I've known countless moments where a judge doesn't DQ the bird simply because almost all the entered "Ameraucanas" or "Araucanas" are EE's, so he would "feel guilty DQing them all."

4-H and county fairs I feel a bit differently about and anything youth. Of course, around here 4-H or county is lucky to get 10 birds entered in the whole show. I expect better in the adult opens at the state level though.

I'm having a bit of a time explaining to my ultra logical DS though as to why his birds placings changed. He's very black and white on the issue.

I have a similar pullet. I think of it as a gold partridge color. I've seen pictures of partridge Araucanas, so I'm assuming that's part of her ancestry. Except for color, she has all the attributes of an ameracauna; pea comb, muffs and beard, bay eye, horn beak, and slate legs. She hasn't started laying yet. I'm curious to see what color she lays.

She's an EE, (read that to say that she is not one of the "accepted" colors of true Ameraucanas)...she kind of has a buff columbian thing going on, but with the darker color all over her back, I don't know that there is a specific color in any breed that we could pin this one on...

She is VERY pretty! I'd be curious to know who sold her to you...though it may be a case of someone bought "Ameraucanas" from a feed store, and truly believes they have purebred Ameraucanas, and are then selling their chicks as such.

Personally, I can never remember whether the U goes after the first A or the second A. I probably never will.

You should not apologize for misspelling! Not one person should be offended by that! Some people don't know the difference, some are not good spellers to begin with. I think it comes down to the misrepresentation (and perpetuation) from hatcheries/breeders' misspelling, not just the spelling itself.

If someone tried to sell a "mutt" horse as a "Thoroughbed", the breed society officials would be all over the seller, not the buyer. Surely it is the seller that needs to be educated first? Maybe we should start providing and expecting registration papers for chickens, just as we do with other purebred species.

I drove over 8 hours to pick up what were represented as "Ameraucanas" but have come to learn that mine are, in fact, Easter Eggers. I love them dearly and they do give me very pretty eggs, but I did believe I was paying for (and driving for ) the real thing - and it was the real thing that I wanted. True enough, had I done more research here first, I might have learned before I bought (and drove) but I trusted the man with the VERY fancy chicken breeding facility knew what he was selling me. (Turns out there IS a real Ameraucana breeder within a reasonable distance from me too. All the more disappointing because I could have purchased the real thing from him.)

Why can't the Ameraucana police get after all the hatcheries that are misleading consumers?

Good question. Perhaps there can be a mini BYC campaign to write to the major hatcheries about this (if it hasn't already been done). The BYCers that are most vehement about the breed misrepresentation and thus profit, should be the first to write them.

Ha! I love how people get all butt hurt over the green/blue egg laying breeds of chickens...if someone doesn't quite have it right when they post the type that they think they have (EE, Aracauna, Ameraucana)--'SPECIALLY SINCE THEY WERE JUST AS "DUMB" AT ONE TIME TOO--'TILL THEY GOT EDUCATED BY SOMEONE. I've got some green/blue egg laying breeds....a mix of one of those breeds and it really doesn't matter unless you're going to show or breed your birds for money. Your chicken's eggs are just as beautiful as any pure bred green/blue egg laying chicken no matter what breed it actually is. I think the real problem is HOW some of the CHICKEN SNOBS go about posting replys to others like they're holier than thou. Funny....they were just as dumb as other's once and someone helped give them information...probably in a nice way too...then they get all high & mighty and snobby. What's up with that? How 'bout just being nice...."MEAN PEOPLE SUCK"

I get so sick of going to the state fair now - this year, I went in, and there were about 15 (I think) birds entered as "Ameraucanas".

Only 1 bird, a blue cock, was an Ameraucana - and he had very severe silver leakage in his color, and his type, from what I remember, was fairly poor. There was an APA colored black hen, but you could easily tell she was an EE as her type was completely wrong.

A large portion of the birds didn't even have muffs, beards, or a pea comb. None of the rest were even an APA accepted color. And what really made my blood boil was the fact that NONE of them had been DQ'd!

I just get so sick and tired of it. I called a guy who was selling two interestingly colored EE hens, and said that they were "High quality ameraucanas that had a long bloodline of show winning birds".

I wish I could take Ramses to the show, so there would at least be a good Ameraucana representative bird - but he would die of a heartattack 5 minutes into it. Plus, I don't like taking the risk of my birds getting sick.
