Miss Lydia my geese do the same I know that the female goes in the house she is making that her nest. The male he makes me laugh he guards her so he stays out side he even chases the wild birds, so they are kept up otherwise they would chase the ducks away from there pen. I have the snow tramped down around there pen so the can walk around. maybe today I can let the geese out we are in for more bad weather snow and freezing rain not good.
What part of the country are you in donkeydew?

Miss Lydia I am in south west Ky. We made it through the rain now every thing is frozen again but the sun is out right now. But I am having an egg problem with my female goose. Her first egg was normal then I have been fining soft eggs but the were torn up today I found a whole egg it is like she forgot the shell. I put oyster shells down she gets layer pellets but this last bag were crumbles flock feed. TSC id not have any thing else do to weather. I also added cracked corn. also they get mixed veg. and corn on the cobb. spring mix lettuce. it has been a rough week. Thanks for any input.

You might want to get her some calcium citrate and add to her water. or calicum gluconate TSC carries it in the livestock section sometimes they just need extra once they begin to lay. How long has she been laying? soft shells can happen when they first begin to lay to until the kinks get worked out. Make sure she is getting more feed along with calcium instead of cracked corn I mix mine 100lbs layer to 50 lb cracked corn. Greens are good to keep on with. It's been a rough week here too. I lost one of my old Muscovy's ducks to the horrid weather we had last week.

I would put oyster shell in her feed for a while. My original buff goose laid one soft shelled egg and then she became egg bound and I lost her.

I am sorry you lost one of your ducks , and yes my goose has just started to lay I will get some calcium citrate tomorrow . I have been feeding a layer feed I like the pellets for the geese. I wish she would wait till it got warmer I would not want to lay when the weather is bad. thanks for your help.

For some reason some females just need more calcium like some of us humans will be deficient in certain things. It takes alot of calcium to make and egg shell so I usually offer them the calcium citrate I got the 1000 megs and put it into 1 gal of water mixed it real good. it was a capsule so I just opened it and poured it in. I also give them oyster shell in a separate bowl and they will eat that as needed.Ever since flockman lost his goose I have been OCD on making sure my girls whether geese or ducks or chickens had enough calcium in their diet.

Mine haven't begun to lay I expect it any day though, I just keep taking the eggs no sense in letting them have them to sit till weather gets better.

Apparently my first goose needed way more calcium. Mary and Martha don't have any issues.
And sometimes there is something wrong with the female organs too, Things we don't know unless we do an necropsy which I just can't bring myself to do.Last year I lost one of my Muscovy ducks to egg laying problems and she had laid fine for over 2 yrs. Just something that happens even when we try to do our best.
