American(Buff, Blue, Lavander, etc.)goose thread! Post pics!

We finally got our pair of goslings yesterday morning! They are American Buffs. I named one Jupiter. My husband named the other one PV, short for Piss & Vinegar. On the drive home, PV was very ornery, pecking at his sibling and everything around him. I exclaimed, "My goodness you are full of piss & vinegar!" Hence, hubby decided on PV for a suitable name.

The slightly larger one with darker markings, is Jupiter. I think she might be a girl. She was affectionate and cuddly from the moment I picked her up. So gentle and sweet. She responds to singing by singing back. Really melted my heart. PV took longer to warm up. We made a safe place in our kitchen complete with basic necessities and a variety of toys, so he could do his own thing while his sister slept in the crook of my arm. Eventually, he came in for a snuggle/nap too. I think PV is a boy because of how wary and fiesty he is. By late night, he began serenading us along with Jupiter. So sweet!

I was on the other side of the island on the right, cleaning and making dinner. When I came around the corner to check in, I found them sleeping together. There is a heating pad under the top layer of old blanket designated for them. They seem to prefer this method of heat over the heat lamp that is to the left of them. We tried keeping them in a tub with the lamp over one corner last night, but they were NOT having any of that! I tried soothing them with my voice. Lasted about a minute. I tried giving an affectionate pat on the head. Lasted about a minute. Finally, I scooped them up and took them to my spare bedroom which has a thick waterproof mattress protector and waterproof protected pillows. I had a homemade heating pad I made with rice and a thick wool sock tucked on one side of them. The other side they slept snuggled into my chest, under an old towel with down comforter on top. This is the only time they settled down for a solid stretch of sleep (3 hours). At 5am, they were making that sweet trill sound. I lifted the blanket and their heads immediately popped up with excitement, lol. They were so happy to be carried downstairs for breakfast and playtime.

They are eating Mazuri Waterfowl Starter. I sprinkled some dry on a towel and also gave them a dish of it mixed in water. I also gave them a 1/4 cup of thawed peas (just the squishy inside part), and some pulvarized cabbage in a ramekin of water. This morning my hubby cut out a chunk of sod for them to try out. They absolutely went crazy for the grass! They are only 3 days old today and the weather isn't quite warm enough for them to go outside to graze. Soon though!

The white stuff on their heads was done by the feedstore to distinguish the breeds. It is really crusted so I will just let to fall out naturally when they get their feathers.

One of the many rewarding experiences our new family members has brought to us, is watching my husband transform. I don't think he was really on board with this. He made it clear several times that they would be my responsibility alone. Now, he can't stop cuddling them and is so worried about keeping them safe and happy that's all he talks about, ha ha ha! :)

By mother of the almighty these two can POOP! I noticed the poop looks exactly like what they just ate. I am going to wait a few more days till their legs are stronger before diaper harness training begins. That is going to make it a lot easier on me as far as cleaning, and allows them to go to carpeted, goose proof parts of our home. In the meantime, oh my goodness, the extra cleaning is worth it. They are just awesome!

What sweet pics, Congrats on your 2 new babies. I can't wait to hear how at 3 months old you are still sleeping with them under covers. lol Be sure to give chick grit when giving them anything other than their starter they have no way of grinding anything up. Cute names too.

Thank you so much, Miss Lydia! I'm crazy about them and so jazzed my husband is too. I read some posts here that said cutting out a section of grass was enough grit for them, but after I saw your suggestion, better to be safe than sorry. I was surprised at how they gobbled it up. That must mean they weren't getting enough in the dirt!

My hope is to get them sleeping at night at least a few hours by themselves ASAP. They get cranky when tired, much like human children. And just like human children, they resist falling asleep with all their might, in case they miss something important! I take the end of the towel and just cover them, leaving a gap so heat can escape from the heating pad under them. After singing one or two nursery rhymes, they are out like a light. I'm going to try something similar tonight, see if that helps.

Here is one of the photos I'm going to enter in the cute baby contest.

PV likes to pose, lol :) He only pecks at Jupiter a little bit now. She walloped him pretty hard last night after getting pecked one too many times. He's really mellowed out since. He's become a lot more social but has a psychotic obsession with my hair.

That is adorable. Hair is something they seem to love but not good for them to eat. lol They look very healthy. Looking forward to watching them grow. Enjoy those sweeties.

I had 2 gosling last summer almost 1 yr old end of May but wanted to say I went to thrift store and got them stuffed animals that can be washed and my gosh did they love them, they'd crawl under a few since they were bigger and fall asleep it was so precious.

Aww :)
I just put 5 american buff eggs in my incubator today. Crossing my fingers some hatch! Also hoping my hen decides to sit on some of her eggs at some point. The more goslings the merrier!

My 15 year old daughter acquired a small flock of American Buff Geese last summer. They originated from Kathy Hopkins in Texas. Last year we only got 1 (one) egg and its was infertile. Just waited too late to go pick them up. But they have started laying and Danyelle has her first clutch in the incubator! Hoping for a good hatch! Here are a few photos of Danyelle's geese!

ohh i got mine 2 years ago when i was 14 it was a blast :)

right now we have one girl laying, and her eggs might be going to PA if they respond :), sadly though i dont think they want them as show geese just as pets , which is fine mine are both, but their parents are just such good quality i wish they could have a bigger reputation as good show geese

Seeing the teen holding an adult buff really puts it into perspective how big they get!!! They really are neat creatures, very inquisitive, talkative and selectively excitable. They sleep through explosions and gun fire during a TV movie, then proceed to loudly tell off my dustpan every time I use it. Got this one of Jupiter today.
