American(Buff, Blue, Lavander, etc.)goose thread! Post pics!

Seeing the teen holding an adult buff really puts it into perspective how big they get!!! They really are neat creatures, very inquisitive, talkative and selectively excitable. They sleep through explosions and gun fire during a TV movie, then proceed to loudly tell off my dustpan every time I use it. Got this one of Jupiter today.
What a precious gosling.

So first there were the small downy feathers under Gus' left eye that would grow so long as to turn inward and cause his eye to become so irritated that I'd have to get two other people to come over and help me hold him steady just so I could trim them. Then there was the time that he developed the 'mystery' lump on the side of his face right where his head and bill connect that we narrowed down to being either a reaction to some type of bug bite/sting or that he had, in fact, tried yet once again to consume that which was not consumable, and had paid the price for his curiosity by being either poked or prodded by whatever in the world it was that he thought it would be a good idea to ingest. Thankfully, that 'mystery' bump cleared up on its own after only a couple of days. But not before I had to, once again, round up a couple of friends to hold him tight while I proceeded to inspect the inside of his bill, under his tongue and down his throat, just to rule out the possibility that an object had lodged somewhere in there and created the problem. There wasn't, and for that I am grateful. All seemed to flowing along smoothly around our little piece of insanity, no new ailments for quite some time. Until this past weekend when I noticed that Gus (yes, of course it would be him again), appeared to be sporting a new little dewlap or two, or three...right up under his chin. Now I know I'm new to geese and all, but I don't ever recall seeing an American Buff with a dewlap hanging from his chin before, and especially not three of them...
That's right. Instead of having one largish one, Gus appears to have three smallish ones, all in a row, right under his chin. If his jawbone had the anatomic structure of a pelican's, I'd be apt to say that he's holding three ping pong balls hostage in there !!! Anyway, if anyone could help shed some light on the anomaly that is my Gus, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. All kidding aside, I really don't know what they could be. They're soft, not hard. They don't bother him and it doesn't hurt him when I squeeze them. They look and feel sort of how I'd imagine a small lump or nodule would look and feel, but yet there's no defined shape or outline of a lump or nodule there to be seen. It's more like he has these three appendages, or apparitions of such, that form little pouches on his neck where a dewlap would be on other geese. It bizarre, that for sure. My gf said she thinks it's just a triple chin...lol !!! I think I'd much prefer it to be ping pong balls. At least they'd be useful !!!

You can really see them in the last pic. I have no idea what they could be Kim, Is there anyway to take Gus to a vet? or are you going to wait it out as long as he is acting normal and eating and drinking without problems? Too bad we don't have a Vet who is on BYC so we could post pics or ask questions directly. I have never seen anything like this.

I put five buff goose eggs in my incubator the other day! My hen has continued to lay since, and is becoming defensive of her nesting location, so I am letting her clutch. Thankfully the weather is slowly becoming milder here, and the eggs are no longer freezing at night. She currently has three eggs, I dont know how many she will lay before she sits. I cant wait for goslings!

Danyelle may have a broody goose. One just will not leave the now community nest. No eggs yesterday, but I removed the extra wooden eggs, leaving her with just one. A few minutes ago Danyelle called me to the kitchen window. Her gander and two geese are laying in our front yard, head inside their wigs, sleeping. the other goose is on the nest. I still think we have a hidden nest or two. Danyelle has searched and can't find any nest but this one. They built another, but abandoned it when Jahdan took all eggs and forgot to leave a wooden nest egg.

As for the gander with dewlaps, I would separate him from the breeding flock and never use him for breeding again. Never know if its genetic.

Below is Danyelle about June 2014 with her only egg from 2014. We were delayed traveling to west Texas to pick her gaggle up and they produced all their eggs there. The lonely egg was not fertile. However, Danyelle and I just candled her 11 eggs in the incubator and they are ALL fertile and developing! She is soooo excited!

FYI: Homeschooling can be so much fun and a learning experience!
