American Gamefowl

I like chickens.
So do I but gamefowl is a lot of work and very expensive to raise. The amount of time involved is bordering on ridiculous. One mistake and you have dead birds. It’s not the same as your hen tapping the wire at another hen.
I have a hen in my shed still because another hen damn near killed her. The hen with chicks is the one that started it and the other hen is the one that came out much better off. It’s not cool, or tough or any of those things. The amount of work far outweighs most benefits for most.
I think you need to really look deep into gamefowl a little more and see the differences.

Not trying to put you off by any means heck it took me along while to even get worthwhile gamefowl because of peddlers and junk sometimes it's best to wait.
I really appreciate the information guys. I’m sure there are some out there who would have sold me the Gamefowl to make a quick buck. :highfive:
I will wait until I have my own property before I get any more American Gamefowl. I do hope when I’m ready to get American Gamefowl that Havoc will be willing to part with 6 hens and a cock or two.

I just read a thread earlier about someone saying they couldn’t go out and put their rooster up because it was lightening.
I don’t have my pens staked. (My fault) but one of the last storms flipped some pens and 3 cocks got out. I was out there in the pouring rain with pens shaking and shuddering, lightening etc..
Its not just me by a long shot. It’s anyone that has gamefowl. They all work their *sses to the bone to keep them up. Nobody else really cares either so if you’re looking for accolades it’ll fade fast.
It’s not hard to keep a chicken alive but it’s tons of work to keep them truly thriving.

I’m not looking for accolades or a shiny star. I do like to think that I care very much for my pets. I’ve been out in the pouring rain getting a pullet out of a tree. I don’t use chicken wire and if my chickens are out foraging I’m out watching them or inside ready to run out if I hear something. I mean my chickens are my pets and even if I looked at them as livestock I still have a responsibility to keep them healthy and safe.

I recall you treating a bird for some kind of crazy disease it should have been culled for. There’s a big difference in “pets” and “gamefowl” You start treating instead of killing the weak and your just asking for problems. IMO If your contemplating taking your chicken to the vet gamefowl aren’t for you. Most issues can be resolved at home by the owner with a few things. Otherwise they should be put down for the benefit of the flock.

Havoc said it real well it's a ton of work.
I always liked gamefowl since a boy my grandpa on my moms side actually was in the center of it here in Nc in the older days. We raised a few as I was growing up nothing serious. So it was a long wait for me and it's only easy if you ain't trying. Pens flipping and birds tearing themselves up hens about killing each other. Varmints, snakes, prey birds. Also culling weak birds instead of treating them for everything under the sun is a no no. I mean this passed year I was digging out pens in 2+ft of snow in single digits. You can't ever get comfortable because when you do it hits the fan I just stayed up for 28hrs straight to get a varmint after my birds not many will do such.
