American Gamefowl

As much as I love history and “old timey stuff” some of the stuff you hear about is nothing more then tall tales. Sad part is quite a few people will quote that kinda stuff and live by it. :lau
Jim Bob in the next holler over down yonder says so! It’s gotta be the gospel!

I actually love all that kinda superstitious nonsense... whether it holds water or not.... it sure made for good conversation...

Seems like old folks used to have a half dozen of them for any topic ...

moles? Aunt Nell brings home hair from the beauty shop and stuffs in the holes... Smitty always said, you gotta use saltpeter... Miss Linda says you gotta wait till a full noon... Uncle Jake had the best little mole dog.... and on and on...

I miss the days when folks would talk about stuff without some knucklehead having to jerk his phone out look up a factoid and shut down the conversation.... lol

I have serious issues with people repeating what they’ve heard and not what they’ve actually done. This place is a haven for it.
I recall a 3 hr argument with my dad over the term “bobcat” and “wildcat”.
I don’t mind when people half heartedly believe it but those folks that swear by it well that’s a totally different animal altogether.

Why ya asking me for? I didn't post it twinkle toes.

Yeah, “the heard and not done” thing is a tough one these days... I’ve noticed that some folks will say “well I’ve heard .... “ or “well I’ve read...”

That I have no problem with... it’s when they leave that off and offer it up as if it’s coming from experience... as you mentioned on a predator thread the other day... it’s glaringly obvious who’s talkin from their backside on some of that stuff...

Maybe your old man was just pulling your chain with the wildcat ;)

Some of those old names are just generational...

I said something about deer “horns” and got a little science lesson from an 18 year old about the difference between horns and antlers... this from a kid that had probably never collected a set of either, lol ...

I’ve known the difference between horns and antlers since I was about 10, but the old fellas always said horns, so I like to say horns some times...

but that was just lost on this kid, because when he was done, I just said “hmmm, well this one had horns....” and laughed...but I could tell from his reaction, it made him doubt everything he’d just said... so I explained “horns” as a colloquialism for “antlers”

But that’s the kinda thing that’s on here all the time...folks given little lessons on what they’ve just read
