It’s pretty much all done to fuel someone’s ego. Like docking and cropping a Dobermans tail and ears. Making them look tougher to appease the insecure owner.

Frostbite and less exposed meat to get bitten by mosquitoes (fowl pox) are just as important though.

I’ve dubbed a few layer roosters before due to frostbite. One in particular had some badly frostbitten wattles. White rock rooster he was.
