American Lingo

My granddaddy used to call every refrigerator a Kelvinator. He called work boots brogans, diapers heapees, a coke bottle a dope bottle, when you yawned you gaped, I could go on and on, life in the south is grand.

weunz down here in the heart of dixie say aint ALOT. Im told im to blame my kids spelling grades because I have what my bride calls a back woods redneck accent. I enjoy the southern slang and i hope it lasts forever. i hear stuff like yellern-yellow one, arn-iron, aig-egg, get from hea-get away from here, oleo-butter, lard-shortning, meinem-me and them, this could go on forever.

I hear that washingtontonians have an accent and say funny things like:

Drag out the eg and o sounds..
egg = eaagggg
leg = leaaggg
both = boooth

always = aw-ways

I know there are a few more but I don't remember them. Funny thing is too, I can't hear these differences! It sounds all the same to me.

As for soda-pop... maybe that's just me.

I know the kids in the area say things like "thats tight" to be "that's cool" and "jacked up" to mean "messed up". My dad asked me about "jacked up" as he didn't know what it meant. hahaha.

We'uns heun in the sout resent y'all makin fun o de way we talk. I jus ain funny no mo.

Dat bin said, der is a lotta y'all dat dont talk so good knetha
so stop makin fun afore we get a comlexion or sumpin

Hey hons. Too bad the weather's gettin' cold or we could all goe downey oh-shun.
(The Balmer accent is the best!)
My mom grew up in Southern Maryland and 'aw-ways" says "warsh" as in, "Warshington",or "warsh" the dishes. I've also noticed "Mondee", "Tuesdee", etc.
'Inmuhtruck" is one word in these parts, too!!

oh forgott warsh I know I dont have the accent but alot of my friends do and my little brother does.

When I was living with my (ex)husband in Norfolk, VA, he used to tell me that no one says sodapop anymore, until we moved to Lou. KY, where I spent my teen years. Norfolk isn't pronounced like it looks, it's Norf^ck. Louisville isn't pronounced Louieville, it's Looavul. I've never pronounced floorboard of the car, just the floor of the car. Even when I'm outside, I will say floor instead of ground half of the time, like forest floor, or, pick your trash off the floor (my oldest girl is bad for littern), meanin, pick your trash up off the ground.
