American serama thread!

It's so hard to be patient for me. We had a serama chick hatch and it was a mottled, drab brownish color. He has since developed into a stunning wheaton! We are really excited. Type, first of course! But very happy to have a cute little wheaten cockerel.

Now... a question. Have there been pairings of seramas with OE's? If breeding for type, would an OE change that? Or am I mis reading? Are there improvements an OE can offer?

I'd rather ask than come to random, unfounded conclusions, even though I'm a bit anxious about possibly offending someone...

I just noticed that Harry/Harriet has gold/redish feathers coming out of his/her neck area now. That will make her much more interesting!

Otherwise, I think she/he has a muddled barred pattern. Is that bad?

Here is Egghead, the one I think would be partridge?? Would both Harry/Harriet and this one be partridge?

Since I just took pictures of everyone, LOL, might as well finish, here is Backie:

And Blondie

And the whole crew together

Sorry for the bad flash photography, always doing this kind of thing at night, LOL.
Here are the words of a major rookie, but....see how Harry has the same feathers on the chest as the rest of him? Now see how Egghead has a buff? chest and a solid-like head? Just a guess...but Harry is partridge and Egghead is chocolate or crele or something else (cuckoo)? And their feet/legs aren't the same either.

And that little black one is a strutter. Check out his/her stance and tail carriage. Is that mottled?

They are all too cute. Congratz on an adorable crew. And if I am totally wrong, please forgive me.

Do you mean Old English Game Bantams? If so, you'll see they have very long backs, and that's something that seems hard to get rid of. The thing about Seramas is that wonderful stance, huge jutting out breast and tail so upright it hits the head. And that wonderful S shape the head and body create. I don't think out breeding will be in any way helpful since this is unique and Seramas come in every color of the rainbow, so there doesn't seem to be any need to do that?? But I'm still a novice, who is learning. There may be a reason to do this that I don't know about?

Thanks so much Lunar, Harry used to look like this:

Just needed an excuse to post him/her again, LOL. I have to look up more pictures to get the idea of the differences :)

Tilly used to look like this....She's a partridge showgirl silkie, but the reason I said partridge. She has her racing stripes down each side of her back too. But the head is what I saw on Harry.

I'm going to agree with you, Lunar, I think Harry/Harriet is Partridge, and boy, it's going to be fun to see what the other two will be. I'm pretty sure blackie with be solid black, he even has a black beak.

I have another question??? I've been seeing pictures of Serama cockerels that look to be no more than 3 weeks old, yet have VERY red combs and wattles even. It may be that these chicks are slow to feather, but at what age do the combs and wattles usually turn color? I'm starting to worry I have 4 hens and no cockerels! LOL. If that's the case, I might run to the Red Barn Feed store and grab the little serama that's been looking for a home there ;P I'm wondering when I'll know?

No one that I know of has ever crossed OEGBs with seramas. First of all, if you are breeding for TYPE first, the OE will bring in the long back, and that is something you do NOT want to breed.
The sreama is a genetic soup mix as it stands with over 2000 possible color variations in its DNA right now. If you selectively breed long enough and are lucky enough you can get the color you seek WITH type.
Personally I like the surprize of whats inside the shell colorwise......

This is a general FYI.: When the seramas were imported from Maylasia about 15 years ago, there were only 135 that came. I do know that another person imported a few more but do not know the amount.
Consequently the genetic pool on the serama here in the USA is rather small. Now you have to seek out breeders for advice beyond this as my old frog brain does not understand genetics so good.... :old

I have been on the site, that's how I knew there was no description. I have been seriously considering which group to join.

Hi Lunar - there is more info and pics of the different color varieties on the ASA forum. I highly recommend you join, just for that reason, if nothing else. There is a great group of friendly people willing to help and answer questions there.

No cross breeding. She was talking about using the OE color descriptions for reference only.

This was my Barney as a chick. I for the life of me can't remember his age in the pic, but you can see he still has all down on his head. My other boy was the same.
