American serama thread!

I kind of hope they do not become like Silkies, where everyone has a flock of them... the breed is still so young that if they start becoming a "fad", there will be tons of bad ones, and that could easily set the breed back from forward movement that has been made in setting breed type and all. Not saying it's a bad thing if people like them, and it's great to get in on the ground floor of this breed, basically. I'm just afraid that there will be lots of people who will just want the tiniest little Class A's and Micros they can get their hands on, no matter what the breed quality. I don't want to see Serama offered in hatchery catalogs >.<
i really think they are too fragile and special needs to end up in that dilemma- i prefer to see improving the breed to just the money angle- i love having them, can't imagine having them out in the elements, and free ranging, they would be gone quick! i love my silkies, but there are alot of badly bred ones, so i limit mine to just my special ones-

for your humor of the nite- just as i clicked, this little guy tried to land on mamas head!

Well, you know... I'm new to chickens, and I fell in love with the Serama's adorable stance, as if he's a soldier. or she's a proper proud lady. But as with all breeds, there will always be the hatchery quality stock and the show quality stock. Maybe the hatcheries don't have Seramas, and perhaps they never will due to the difficulties, but even so, there are enough seramas out there from people who aren't breeding to type to make up for it. You know, it's OK. They don't all have to be Show quality to make people happy. Unless I'm missing something? As long as there are breeders keeping the quality up to par, the Serama can only benefit from being popular (it's better than being endangered).

Which reminds me, from what I've been reading about chicken breeding, they don't often or lightly get in-bred. I mean, it takes like 30 generations of father to daughter/mother to son parings to see detrimental effects, as I understand it (maybe not completely right, but sorta) So I don't see the need to out breed a bird, unless you want to add other qualities such as a color not available to the breed, or different kinds of combs... etc... Am I missing something? I may have read a bad research paper somewhere along the way also, LOL........

Oh, and I'm kind of giggling, because if Jerry S and Ms. Theodore imported "all" the Seramas in America, we could probably all safely claim "Our Seramas are from Jerry S and KJ Theodore's stock"

(please, I'm joking)

LOL! He's going to be a pistol! :D So cute!

Well ya know, I'm gonna try doing the NYD hatchalong, but if I am unsuccessful, and my chicks all end up being hens, I'd go for a Jerry cull as well, just so I can have one with the look I really want! It wouldn't matter if he's a little big! Or small? All I want is to enjoy them. I may be interested in how genetics work, I might even hatcn some of my own eggs in the future, but I have no room for breeding (though I'm making the run big enough for me to put a table and chair inside so I can sit and join the little buggers and enjoy them ;) ) Nah, for me, this is a pet, and get some eggs thing ;P

But I really want some strutting roos with big attitude and sweet dispositions! LOL
