American serama thread!

awww Sally....they are adorable. I had to go after a Silkie earlier this week....so glad I did. It ended up being a black Showgirl; well worth the stress of helping. She is doing great.

My Serama girls are in gear now. Yesterday and today I have gotten 5 eggs from 5 hens.

did she have an internal pip or no

Yes, she was chirping and wiggling, but no cracks at all. Her clutch mates were out and she started to sound like she was getting weaker, so I jumped in. They only have about 20 hours of air. I waited 16. She had gotten her head thru the membrane into the air sac, but was trapped with her head turned so she couldn't hit the shell. I used a warm, moist towel to hold her egg and broke the egg shell first in a circle. Then I candled it to see where her head was and tore a hole in the outer membrane. Thats when I could see she was turned with the back of her head against the shell.

I tore the top off the shell and kept her damp and started peeling shell/membrane off. IF YOU HIT BLOOD...STOP. Let her stay put for a bit and then start again. Keep it moist and warm. She had absorbed the yolk, so I was lucky and got her out in about half an hour. I just took shell off first and then started rolling down the membrane toward her rump. When I could see that she had absorbed the yolk and was closed up, I laid her back in the hatcher and let her break free of the membrane on her own. I broke all the shell off and just had her and a small amount of the membrane left on her when I did that.

Make sure your humidity stays up for this so she doesn't dry out to bad. I did have to give her a bath the next day as she was all sticky from drying out in the egg. There are several good videos on YouTube. I put her a washcloth in the hatcher to lay on and she dried and was fine in about 12 hours. (I have a fan in my hatcher) She snuggled with her clutch mates and is now eating and drinking and running around a brooder tub with them.

I named her Breathless as she was down to about 4 hours of air when I jumped in.

This isn't the best picture, but here she is.

Her clutch mates were a columbian silkie and a blue (both regular silkes) and she is a black showgirl.

She liked sitting in the slot of that egg rail beside the cochins that hatched today. Out of 8 eggs in Lock Down, I got 3 silkies and all 4 cochins.
