American serama thread!

Look what our cold cold weather in Arizona brought us! The two together is 2 days old and the others are still wet in the pictures and was born just a hour or so ago. More on the way. It might be a cold long night!

OMG cutness overload, I want some wittle goats so bad (rethinking fencing budget)
WELCOME! You are a smart cookie. I totally Half - A** all my preparations for just about anything and then always have some mega disaster because I'm so eager to get my hands on something!

I had my seramas inside in a small rabbit cage with shavings. Whenever I was home the cage door was open and they would come in and out as they please. They would also wear diapers while I was home so they wouldn't make a mess on anything. It was great! I miss having them inside - but I got two baby bunnies and they are my room pets at the moment, so the chickies had to go outside for now. I'll have seramas back in my room if I ever get any eggs to hatch though! UHG haha

OHMIGOSH that is the coolest cage I have every seen! Where can you get your hands on that?!!? I need one for my serama to keep indoors!!!! I've NEVER seen a cat cage! And I work in a vet clinic inside a petsmart! LOL
Those are the single cutest baby goats I think I have ever seen! I have been BEGGING DH to let me get a pair of goats! Goats rabbits and chickens all go SOOOO well together... but he says I need a bigger yard... he's probably right, but I want a pair of Nigerian dwarfs so insanely bad I can't tell you how drooly this pic makes me
Awwww cute babies! I'm sorry about the prolapsed butt. Prolapse seems to be the theme of the week... we had two prolapse dog uteruses and a prolapse snake bladder at the clinic this week! But I bet his cute little butt will go away. Have you tried Preparation H? Even if it doesn't help with the actual prolapse part, it can be soothing to the birdy.

Alrighty everyone - I know its been a while since we've talked about Serama diapers but I have PERFECTED the Serama diaper!!!! My birds love them and they fit Absolutely perfect! I can sell them to those ho aren't as sew-y handy for $20 (They are so small I should be able to send them in a super tiny yellow envelope for cheap so that price would include shipping for now) OR if you are interested in getting the specs/pattern I can send pictures with my attempt at dimensions if you PM me, or if there is a big enough request I can just post that info straight on the board for y'all.
Now my pattern is bird specific, however the piece that goes over the back is completely removable and interchangeable so that the same diaper can fit different birds with the right back piece. I would need measurements of vent to base of neck on the chest, and base of neck on the back to the base of the tail on the back. If your guy has a thicker neck or tail than about 1in in diameter, you would need to let me know so it doesn't strangle them haha.
This is the best picture I have, but if you guys would like to see more, I can take some this weekend. Just let me know if you guys are interested in these little things.
I HOPE to be able to offer them cheaper, I just have to get the "mass production" part down pat.
This picture has BUTTONS and FABRIC straps but the model I like the best has SNAPS and ELASTIC straps. I would be happy to make a fabric and button combo but it is waaaay more work so would have to charge more. The elastic is small though so their feathers hide it quite nicely.
The snaps will also be just a bit smaller than the buttons - the big snaps I made my first few with are not only overpowering in the diaper's overall cuteness, but too heavy duty and tough on my fingers. Seems excessively strong for a tiny little serama even when they pull their very hardest on the leash/leash loop.
The inside of the poop cup is waterproof diaper fabric. My first few diapers didn't have this and I found they got really soggy and gross. The waterproof liner also adds some stability to the cup fabric so it stays open on it's own.
It's super easy to put on because of where I placed the 4 snaps on the back (buttons in the photo) so there is zero choking, squeezing, or feather ruffling in the process.
DISCLAIMER - Taco, my roo, hates his diaper. He sits on the ground tilting to one side brooding and making guttural muttering noises when he is forced to wear it. His girlfriend Belle on the other hand has no problem with hers. In fact it doesn't even hinder her ability to fly! She can still get up as high as she wants and perch anywhere in the house. It did take a coaching session of tossing her diaper-clad in the air to DH 3 feet away to get her to try out the flyaing part, but as soon as we played a little Belle catch 3 or 4 times she figured out she could still flap her wings and drive herself with it on and took to wonderfully.

You can't actually see the butt cup in the picture. It's not so large that it over powers their tiny size, so I just depends on volume of your birds poop. Belle only NEEDS a change every 4 hours, but I try to change it every hour since I'm around and I don't want poop weight messing with her balance.
Great idea, I wouldent mind having some of these, the hubby would enjoy them being inside alot more and stop pestering me about poop :)
Kukupecpec get ready to drool some more then. We had triplets born early morning and I got some great pictures. This is a little boy with mother Tumblelina.

Little doe.

Little red bucky boy.

The family.

Congrats ur so lucky they are adorable~!

I just took another picture of my babies. I took away their paper towels and they're now on shavings! They've been playing non-stop in those shavings!!! It's too cute! Anyway, another shot to show the curl in the wing feathers. I'm wondering if that's normal for Silkied feathered birds? I can't wait until these two grow up a bit more. Sure, chicks are cute, but the bigger birds are so much more personable!

That last one looks like a sizzle, not a silkie, not a frizzle.

So Turtle is still a-turtle'n. Looks happy and healthy so far. But the other one hasn't made any progress at all since last night. When should I try to help him outta his shell? He has air because he cracked tot he outside, but hasn't gotten any further. He's peeping like crazy and breathing, but he's not really pecking or rocking his egg at all.

Oh, I wouldn't have had as much patience as you! LOL I help mine within a few hours of them making no progress. (I know that isn't necessarily what is suggested though!)

x2. What are the others doing?
I candled the other three and it doesn't look like there is really anything in there. Not nearly as dark as the two that are hatching. Just thought I would wish them into being lol. So it's looking like just these 2 kids.

So should I try to help him peel his shell off and just stop if I see any blood?

That rabbit cage looks fantastic! I also thought about using an entertainment center or tv armoire since I see them on CL for free all the time, and then covering the front in wire/plexiglass. I've seen snake cages made out of them/similar things, so was thinking with a little creativity I could manage a serama cage.

Quit showing off that adorable little silkied baby before I go egg shopping!

I just hate not knowing! I was telling Bhep how I used to find the hidden Christmas presents around the house and carefully un-tape them so I could see what I was getting! The suspense just killed me! LOL

Thanks so much OC! I'm going to relax now and just be happy he's healthy, but I suspect frizzle with the silkie too, and it's really cool. I'm quite happy :)

Is he the last one to come out? If you open up the incubator in a very humid bathroom, it might be ok, but I'm just worried because it seems to me a small incubator could loose humidity fast, however I might be completely wrong, and it might recover just as fast??? I just hope he comes out ok and that you end up with a fantastic hatch! Sounds like it is going ok so far though! Congratulations!

Oh, yay! Happy it's still here, and back to normal.
For those of you that keep your birds inside, do they need their nails or beaks trimmed? I put a brick, and an extra pedi perch I had from when I had conures to try to help them keep them worn naturally, plus some branches. Anything else anyone does?
The little boy up front's looks fine, (he's the one with a crush on my hand, lol), but what about frizzle girl behind him? How long should I let it get before worrying?

I keep my birds nails and beaks trimmed. Some beaks seem to grow a lot faster than others. I don't ever trim the bottom beak, but I keep the top half trimmed to just a tiny bit longer than the bottom. Some of them will get long enough to interfere with their eating. I use a pair of human toenail clippers to do this. To trim the nails I use a pair of dog or cat nail clippers. If you don't keep them trimmed they will grow long and start to curve around. Just try not to cut into the quick or it will bleed. If you hold the foot up to the light you can usually see the vein in the nail. If it does bleed, it usually stops pretty quickly. I can manage to do this myself, but it's a whole lot easier to do if you have help holding the bird.

Well I took off Turtle's shell. He's all fine and fluffing out now.
The other guy - I took him out and helped him outta his shell. He layed on his side and flailed for a good hour before I took him out and trued to help him stand up a little. His toesies look really curly and crooked is that normal? I don't remember if Turtle's toes were curled cause he looks totally fine now!

I would put him back in the bator and let him rest. Because he did not hatch himself the feet did not "work out" pushing him around the inside of the shell while he was zipping. Walking on the hardware cloth in the bator seems to help the toes uncurl if there is not a problem with them.
