American serama thread!

Well this day sucks already! I left the hose on all night by mistake. About 10 hours! Then I noticed that my precious turkey Blue Bell is blind in both eyes. Bad infection. I am afraid this will be her last day. I have to steel myself to putting her down. She is 6 and is going badly down hill for about 2 months. Loosing weight and not herself. 6 is not too old for a turkey but she has servived 2 eye infections and 3 dog maulings and it has taken its toll on her health. Now with a infection in both eyes it is time. MY sweet Blue Bell.
OH MY, I hate reading sad storys.....I am so sorry your Bluebell is going so poorly......my heart goes out to you.....sigh...........

Hey guys, hope all is well.
I just hatched 2 little Serema chicks, and I did the feather sexing and pretty sure they're both hens, so I'm planning what to breed them too next year.
Which roo looks better stance wise, would do better in show, etc. anything that shows if its a SQ bird or not

This pic best showed his back (he's not so photogenic as the other boy), not so much his colors though.

The mom

She's also not too photogenic xD but here's the mom trying to find food in a poop covered roost. Lol

And the other boy who I really love, but his tail isn't so full, but I think his stance is better

Ill try to take better pics tomorrow, or maybe this afternoon. I need to let them perch on my hand while someone takes a pic

YUP you need some better pics of your boyz [possibly posing] to be able to help you on who is the better built boy...LOL

So sorry about your hen, she seems so sweet <333

froggiesheins Wow! Your coop is so cute! Thanks for answering my questions.

Right now, I have them inside my house in a 5 ft L X 5 ft W X 2 ft H open top box that Lowe's gave me. They had folding tables in it & it was empty in an aisle so I asked for it. The guy looked at my like I was crazy. lol! I have bird netting over the top pf the box & a roost in it.

They have never been handled (they are about 6 1/2 months old) so I haven't been able to catch them to take them outside in a cage. I almost had her caught earlier but he about ate me for lunch. I guess I need to work on him first?? When they guy caught them to sell them to me, he used a fishing net & scooped them out of their little cage. He messed up a few of Blaze's tail feathers. GRRR!

I've read that you can win non-tame chickens over with treats & I've given them spinach a couple times. Pretty Girl loves it more than Blaze does. I'm open to suggestions on how to tame them.

MAN YOU SCORED A NICE BOX! After having chickens, you never look at boxes the same way again! hee hee

I have a net to catch the errant rascals at my house..REALLY REALLY are handy sometimes.
I have alot of rescue and rehomes come thru my place so it is an important tool. BUT I made mine with soft neting for smaller birdies..LOL

OK, catching in the box: get another piece of cardboard that you can handle with one hand, and make it into a corner shape, move back the netting just enough for you to get your body over the box so they can't fly out....use the corner shape piece of cardboard to "corner" the sweetie so you can grab 'em with your other hand. THEN hang on to em for dear life get them up under your chin and start to work....LOL

My second post to you has more "taming the beast" info in it...... but in a nice way.....

SD CARTER:
Hi,
Just a little feedback about taming.and how it has worked for me.....................
My experience is that I catch them...........usually Roos and carry them around while I feed
or walk around the yard..........a couple have become real cuddle bugs......two others
just do not like being tken away from the flock but no longer freak out when working with them.
We have a guy in a parrot cage in the kitchen right now.........He has become a real pet.
Talks to us, does a little dance to get treats and seems to enjoy being held.
Good Luck..............I am happy for you with your new Serama's .nothing like them.
Grapes seem to be a favorite treat here.............
