American serama thread!

They are just weird. I could have a house rabbits, cats, dogs, or parrots but no bantams of any kind. They told me that the last time they had bantams, they went feral, jumped the fence and overpopulated. They had 70+ chickens running rampant on and off their property. They ended up having to trap every one of them and take them to family that lives out in the country. This just boggles my mind. Its kinda funny, I think they raise chickens wrong. lol The fun part is that, right now, they think I'm crazy because I am training my 5 week old chicks to come by name and be handled.

lol! I think I can get away with having a silkie, because they cant fly. I haven't had one since I was a kid. I was wanting one before I found Seramas on the internet. My in laws are so set in their minds. They send their four week old chicks outside! (CA is warm, but it is still too cold at night in the spring) My husband is amused/annoyed that I keep shouting out Serama egg prices that I find online. I guess my maternal egg timer is going off.

It is so great getting to see all of your guys' babies! I wish I could have a pair in the house, but my in laws don't believe in having bantams or indoor chickens(unless in a brooder). I was telling them about Seramas and they freaked out... :rant

I guess I have to wait another year... not that I could find any locally.  Keep posting pics, so I can live vicariously through  you guys. lol

Time to get your own house and there are LOTS of seramas in CA.
POOP on the inlaws, they are much nicer pets than a parrot ;)

Just ask where to get them :love

WOW. Just got an email from them about 2 pullets they have for sale. $50 each. On top of that it would cost me another $50 in gas to get there and back plus 6 hrs out of my day. So I'd have $150 in 2 pullets. Way out of my price range. My jaw about dropped when I read their email. They have some gorgeous birds but so do I and I could never imagine charging someone $50 for one. Ok.. I'm done ranting. Sorry

I understand how you feel but I'm very happy with mine. To me the quality of the birds and knowing they are champion sired makes them worth what I paid. Not everyone is interested in SQ and bloodline so they really aren't for everyone. I do love their birds and received training and showing tips you can't find online. That and I really felt the need to splurge on something for myself for a change. I hope to be able to get black pair later.

Not everyone can afford those prices, even if they are interested in SQ.

Sometimes I think people get to caught up in the $$ side of things. Just saying people need to remember these are still chickens. That weight what 1 lbs. I agree with breeding resposably and keeping the breed standard correct and healthy but $50.00 for 1 1lbs bird is shocking to me. I feel the same way for all types of animals. Dogs, horses, even cattle. Just my personal opinion but things have gotten way out of hand cost wise. We need to remember the good ol days and how things used to be, how things got started And where things came from.

I understand that but I still love my new babies and can't wait to see what they produce. I wonder how price compares to hatch rate of shipped eggs though. If you do get some to hatch you still have to hope they aren't mixed or just poor quality. I just got to the point that I felt spending the money and knowing what I have seemed more cost effective. I have had horrible luck with shipped eggs and some people are not honest about what they are selling.
