American serama thread!

i feed chicks a mix of half and half medicated starter and unmedicated as there are some breeders finding they are so sensitive to medicated feed- and i dampen the food- yes i have little gremlins while i am doing things during the day-hovering over my shoulder supervising everything like spaz
I've never had issues with full medicated feed but never thought of this. I always have non medicated starter for the call ducks so I may just start mixing it to be on the safe side. Thanks. Your boy is handsome. I hope to add some silkies to my flock this year also.

the triplets dont seem to have much of an interest in food yet. or water. Just got them pecking a little with some wet mash. How long is it safe to keep down if it has been moistened ? They are still very sleepy.

I'm working on it!

I'm working on it! :D

I'm so excited. I'm patiently waiting. No rush :) I have 7 broody hens right now with lots of eggs under them... orpingtons, ameraucanas, duccle and call ducks. Have 2 incubators full also. The hatching should begin this weekend and continue through the 28th :) Once the first eggs under the broodies hatch I will give them some of the ones out of the incubators. I have 2 duccle brooding together, 2 cochin bantams, 2 wyandotte bantams and 1 call duck lol. I think it's all the peeps from the babies that I moved outside last month. I've never had so many broodies at 1 time. I will only let them set 2 rounds and then I will let them keep the babies they hatch from the 2nd batch. The next eggs are already in the incubator so it won't even be 2 whole sittings. So far everyone is doing great :) This is the 2nd time 1 of the cochin bantams has gone broody already this year. She hatches out 12 bantams back in January and is a great mother. The other cochin hatched a couple clutches last year but is her first time sitting this year. I hope I have a broody when you have the silkie eggs available. They always do a better job than I do :)

This is a recommendation for feeding serama chicks, haven't done it yet- but wanted to pass it on, here is Jer's website

Jer Schex my starter feed,
for 2 weeks, 1 cup medicated starter, 1 cup corn meal, 1 cup oatmeal, 1/2 cup dried meal worms, run through the mill/grinder twice

2 weeks I feed 50/50 medicated/non medicated starter/grower,
switch to lay crumble at approx 5 months, they can be sexed at 4-5 weeks, size and color of comb.

You are really causing my addiction to go into over drive. I'm trying to be good. lol Good luck with your hatches.

I picked up 6 chicks yesterday.
4 are a week old. 2 are a couple of months. The older two are completely taking care of the babies. It's so sweet to see.
Yep, doesn't take long to fall in love with these little boogers.
