American serama thread!

If you guys can get them locally, or within driving distance, I highly recommend that. Out of my shipped Serama eggs, I had 1 hatch out of 40 eggs. Local eggs hatched 6 out of 7 and the seventh was almost unzipped when he quit. I know a lot of it has to do with my inexperience, but I think next time, I'll stick to local eggs. Or at least, take into consideration how far the eggs have to travel and through what kind of weather. Even the best breeder/egg shipper can't control the mail or the weather. Did you know when the mailman gave us our very first hatching eggs, he THREW the box into the air, so it flipped over and we had to CATCH it! Then he made a joke about not writing " fragile " on boxes you ship. My husband was just stunned. He said "Well, those were hatching eggs so, you probably just killed any chance we had at hatching them." And whatta know? Not a single egg hatched.

That's horrible! I'm on the same page! I ordered from a company 3 x and what did hatch that was not covered in stuff or broken were cockerels . The only females who made it were my two new seramas. So I'm keeping 1 roo out of 5. Just going to hatching myself. I have better luck and I know which hens give pullets. I was very frustrated and out a lot of $$$$

If you do want shipped hatching eggs, I recommend decaturdude for frizzles and good eggs. They worked with me on my order when his hens stopped laying by splitting it in to two free of a second shipping charge, sent extras both times, and I got an excellent hatch rate. 14 eggs, 12 chicks, 2 are frizzle. The frizzles are also small and plenty type-y. Downside is if it isn't one of the whites your chicks are likely to be dark colored. I have a salmon boy and a light chocolate girl from that hatch, the rest are black including the frizzles.

Finding someone near you will def give you the best hatch rate though. You might even be able to buy chicks directly if the breeder will hatch some for you, or take a pet quality adult if you're just looking for a pet :)

Also, I have a ? for those of you who have used seramas as broodies: how do they do with LF eggs? I imagine they wouldn't do well, but I might be imagining things.

I have two persistant broodies, and a shipment of LF eggs that are high value on the way. I know there will be extras I can't fit in my incubator, so I am wondering if I should give one each to my broody ladies or just wait to rotate them in to the incubator when I pull the possible clears. Probably should hold them to rotate them in to the 'bator. I'll probably be wanting serama or quail eggs for these gals to hatch or.. does anyone know if they would do well with d'uccle eggs? I've not had that breed, no idea how big the eggs are.

No problem! I mostly hatched some same-y-but-not-bad roosters, so I'll just post the stand outs. Please keep in mind they are young! Birth dates are 06/29 and 07/06, they're from a staggered hatch. They're nowhere near "type up" age.

My salmon-y looking boy who I plan to keep.

My frizzle boy who I am also keeping. Hopeful that his crimped waddle will grow out, he's had it about a week now.

The light chocolate-y gal who is looking VERY upset because she rolled on to a cecal and got a bath about an hour ago! So she is not looking her best, but gosh is she every tiny and her colors are pretty.

A black pullet named Reggie. Sweetest bird you'll ever meet, hope she types up.

My black frizzle pullet.

OH GOSH!! I wonder if the eggs that just got shipped for me today will be here in time for that!! I love Halloween, and dare I say the chickens will even match the spirit. I hope you get a good hatch from 'em! Apologies in advance if I turned out to be like the one person who got any eggs to hatch from them ever or something LMAO

I'm hatching out more Serama (

) for Sally's Halloween hatch along too! Eggs should be here to set by the 10th! I think I liked the results with dry hatching better & looking forward to trying it again. It was easier, less time consuming & less stressful. All with better results, at least for me & I'm a noob

This'll be fun! It's my favorite & the only holiday I go all out for!
