American serama thread!

I'm hatching out more Serama (

) for Sally's Halloween hatch along too! Eggs should be here to set by the 10th! I think I liked the results with dry hatching better & looking forward to trying it again. It was easier, less time consuming & less stressful. All with better results, at least for me & I'm a noob

This'll be fun! It's my favorite & the only holiday I go all out for!

What incubator do you have? I have the brinsea mini, I haven't hatched in it, but i turned it on empty and it takes 5 min. to heat up and stays that way the entire time, plus, you don't have to turn off turners, it does that itself!

I also have a brinsea mini, I want to get another. I mostly do dry hatches for serama in it too, though I can't claim to have been doing it on purpose, its more of a "I forgot to fill the water pots again" kind of dry

I've liked it for the most part but I will say I have at least one malposition each hatch. Unlikely to be pure coincidence but my hatch rates are 70%-100% with shipped serama eggs so I'm cautious about trying to fix what isn't fully broke

I would not change anything! that is an amazing hatch rate! Im hoping to have 25%+ Hatch rate... I have one serama rooster, so I want a few little girls, and a too or two.... Chicken math... I think that i might just fill the pot a little bit- maybe half... It sounds like people are having better hatch rates with shipped eggs doing that. I also am planning a project... Feel Free to tell me if I'm crazy... I want to work on an auto Sexing serama...... I know that a barred chicken with a solid one will produce an autosexing chick.... Im hoping to try that with seramas, because- how cool would that be?

That would be cool! Already there is the Chocolate, which is sex linked. If you put a chocolate rooster over non-chocolate hens, all the chocolates that hatch will be daughters. That's the closest we have, but it doesn't breed true, you have to keep putting chocolate boys over non-choc girls. Or I could be talking out my butt and the chocolate in seramas isn't the same as the chocolate in everything else LMAO. You'll want to look at the few "breeds true" autosexing breeds to get an idea of what genes you need to isolate (which will be a task in serama) and breed for.

I want to try breeding naked neck serama someday, so not crazy at all to me

Haha thanks, it will be a while, but it sounds pretty interesting, naked necked might be some task.....

I have my dinky Dasp YZ9-7.
I got it because it was cheapish & I figured it'd be fun to see if I liked hatching serama. I really do like the Brinsea Minis & if I could find a decent price on a used one I might get one some time. Even the Eco one looks nice.

I was just eyeballing these cheapie incubators on ebay! I'm sorely tempted by the 48 egg ones. If something of that make can hatch a delicate small egg, well, maybe I should give it a shot..

I really had no major issue with it after I learned a little better what I was doing. I learned that the display shows about 3 degrees warmer than what it is really running at but other than that it stays pretty consistent with the heat. I had to learn that because it's so tiny it will spike if I don't just unplug it before opening. I'm sure it'll be better with the 48 egg one though.
