My birds did fantastic at the show! My little 5 and a half month old Cockeral got 4th out of about 15 prospect birds. His score was 78...pretty good for his second time. All of my birds beat there previous scores. Unfortunately all but one of my hens froze on the table. I got a new pair. They are so pretty and will be an asset to my breeding. I should be getting more hens from the same lineage soon.
An egg I got from a breeder pipped 2 days ago. After 24 hours I went to help...it haven't absorbed its veins and bled. So this morning I helped it a little more and the veins were almost completely absorbed. They finally finished this afternoon! The baby is in the bator drying!
Thanks! thats Nice that she got off her eggs to take care of babies!Yeah Pebbles!
We had 42 degrees below zero F last night. My heated coop is just above freezing; the serama seem fine-no sign of distress at all. Apparently they are more hardy than they are given credit for.
Oddly, a silkie broody has abandoned her dummy eggs she was brooding to care for all the young serama who were cold. They were weaned weeks ago-strange-but a relief not to have to bring them in to keep them warm.
Thanks!Congratulations!
They are so cute!Chick Party Hopefully we're done with the freezes this year. 4 of these guys are weaned. The other 9 are back with their Mommas for another week.Thank you to the 3 who helped me experiment with shipping eggs. It seems that even if you make the package crushproof, there are "air cells" that are easily damaged. The only thing left to try is a postal feature called "special handling". The USPS charges $10.40 on top of the existing postage. More expensive for everyone but if it works, it may be the only option? I've got 11 eggs collected the last 3 days. I'm gonna put them in 2 nest boxes and see if any hens are ready to sit. We've got Indian Summer. As usual, I'm hoping for an Indian Spring.
I wish you luck. I'm hoping you post what happens.I took 8 of the eggs from two and three days ago and put out just one nest.
I put it in the goat house with 4 hens. Clodagh immediately went over and stuck her head in the box.
She was scrutinizing the eggs and I thought she was gonna sit right there when suddenly the young roo jumped her from behind.
Time to remove the teenager.
Maybe she's get on them later.
