American serama thread!

Sorry, I just realized my mistake with this comment

4 week old Tribbles
Dorothy 2.7 oz.
Tink 5.7 oz.

The birds are not 4 weeks old. They are 8 weeks old!!
Hatched 1/19 & 1/22

The best part is that out of 10 birds in that group, she is the fastest.
Sometimes tiny chicks don't have a lot of vitality.
I had one not long ago that died the day before it turned 7 weeks old.
She weighed 28 grams. That is 1 ounce.

wow! What do the adults weigh?

Most of them start out pretty small but they now keep growing for an entire year it seems.
I think that having a bigger abdominal cavity is altering the breed.
The tiny birds like Dorothy seem to start out not much smaller than the other birds,
they just stay tiny as they develop.
The year old hens lay huge eggs.

Porcupine:
Ok so I got my second egg from porcupine yesterday. This egg had a little blood on it so I'm thinking she might be younger then I first thought.,that could explain several things.
1) she is young and way down on the peaking order would help explain her condition.
2) her operatic nonconsistant laying

I have only ever seen blood on eggs coming from New layers.

Any thoughts? Same for me.

** both eggs good size solid well shaped shell
I was looking at my frizzle hen close up the other day. The feather shafts on her wings and tail are very long. If they were to all start growing in like Porcupine they undoubtedly would look very similar to Porcupine's. Are any of those quills opening to normalish feathers?

Hi! I'm Debi from Ohio. I just started with Serama and I have 3 hens and a rooster. I also have 2 Silkie hens. I would love a frizzle Serama hen. I would like to be included in the info shared on this thread.

Hi Debi. I'm Dan from Wisconsin. I started with serama last May. I've a dozen plus a few chicks. I also have a silkie hen that I use for brooding purposes. Welcome to BYC and the thread.

yes! Welcome! I am about to ask a question so Keep your eyes open!

Ok here is the Question... I just set 6 serama eggs, I know the hen/rooster combo, There is one egg that looks like it is a little darker, which probably means that it is from my hen that died a few days ago. Naturaly I want this hatch to go very well, what kind of incubation things do you do for your guys's eggs?

I use broody hens; my incubator is for emergency use only. Conditions in an incubator are too hard to keep constant and that has caused a lot of disappointments over the years.

I am trading this gal away for a young pair of whites this weekend, trying to enjoy what time I have left with her. She's going in to someone's black project. I guess she has trouble getting solid black birds but I've got them coming out my ears! I want other colors, I have way too many black birds. I think one of her sisters plucks her neck out of affection.. I sure hope they'll be alright being separated! Can't help but worry over her a little bit. I'm still getting used to letting go of birds I hatched and raised, haha.

A frizzle! My wife complained the other day that I keep mostly browns and grays. I like color variety too; just seems my best chicks are always browns or grays.
