Memphis, sorry, it is tough. I have not had many SErama hatch until recently. When you get those little bitty ones, sometimes they just are not strong enough to make it. sometimes they have some kind of internal problem.
Prey animals hide all injuries and illnesses and you often won't notice a thing until they are dead or very close to it. There really isn't anything else you can do about it.

I am thinking that maybe she was a micro. She was half the size of the other 2 and they were from the same eggs. One is still a little smaller than the other, but not as much as the one that died.

I forgot to tell you that the black/white one that I got from you is Shamo. It is so big! At first I was starting to think that it wasn't 100% serama...just knowing where you got the eggs from. But it looks like a serama...just on seriods! I think it is a class E or F if there is such a thing! It is so funny. It doesn't realize how big it is and tries to run around the mason jar water dispenser and can't figure out why everyone else can get around it. The white one is still white. It has a cream spot on its wing, but I can't tell if it is dirt or an actual spot.

Chicklette, yes it's fine to trim the beak and nails, just take care not to get into the quick. I use a nail file to smooth any rough edges. I need to trim a few of my own too. They would keep them smoothed off if they had something to rub the beak on that was rough. I've considered putting a small rock or piece of cinder block in the wire pens for that. You could also wrap something in sandpaper to do the same thing.

Jerry, Those Dalmation Serama's are over the top again, soooo cool!

Ruthless!! way to go!

Others......dang, you all had bad withdrawal

It's taken me a half hour to catch up. I'm very sorry to hear about Opal. A good preventive for sour crop is a tsp of real apple cider vinegar in a gallon of water. It's the kind you get at the health food store, Not the grocery store kind.

My turn,
Here are a couple of new photo of my rooster Blu-T that I took this morning. Look at how different he looks, one taken in bright sun and one in the shade, talk about a bird of a different color

And he is that vividly colored in person

Here are a couple of his chicks, a solid blue and a blue patterned of some sort. I can't wait to see them feathered out more.

I am really sorry about the chick.I lost one last week and felt I screwed up.hatched two, they seemed ok and active
and one just died....did not even get out of the inc.
Anyway, my point is, it is not always our fault.sometimes things are just out of our control.
I know you did your best for this little guy.............It is obvious form your posts how much you love your chickens.........

Well, that black and white one was the only one that was black and with yellow legs - LOL! Shamo is a great name! Maybe it will slow down and not be as big as you think. It wasn't "that" much bigger than everyone else when it hatched.

The two babies right now are a little smaller than the white one was when it hatched.

I'm not sure that #2 will be okay, it still ends up on it's back a lot. In the incubator it looked comfy like that, like it was planning on it happening. In the brooder it looks more distressed when it happens. It's legs are fine, but it doesn't seem as coordinated as normal. We'll see how it goes, but I told Karsen not to get too attached. #1 does chirp like crazy at #2 when it's upside down, so we know to come and help. Hopefully it will get the hang of being alive and stay that way! Still not getting too attached though. #1 seems healthy as a horse. The #3 egg still hasn't hatched but I candled it again this am and is alive and moving when I chirp or tap. Maybe I wrote the date on the egg wrong and it's part of the 7/29 lockdown instead of the 7/27 lockdown ... maybe my writing was not so clear. So, now it's with the 7/29 buddies waiting to hatch.

I did have a big scare last night. When Karsen said good night to the chicks, I didn't know he stepped on the power strip and it turned the incubators both off. But the lights for the wine cooler and thermostat are on a different power strip so those stayed on. It clued me in because the lights kept coming on and then turning off every minute or two (because the fans are on the incubator powerstrip). Usually the lights stay on a big longer because the fans move the air. So I looked and the wine cooler was down to 96, and the hovabator was down to 86! Really freaked me out. So I was up to 12:30am making sure they were stabilized. I did some candling this morning and everyone seems fine

I think I'll be nailing the powerstrip to the desk, so that can't happen again. I'm at work the next three days, and it would really irritate me to come home to cold eggs!
