These teeny tiny birds. Been reading the websites, etc and feel like I just am not catching on. Plus the colors are all over the place (gorgeous, but all over the place). I used to breed for the MFC project until last year so I'm used to something real different.

I'm just feeling a bit overwhelmed. I haven't even decided what would be good to start with bird-wise, or anything like that. Just trying to figure out where to start can be confusing, and I'm not the best of people when it comes to making decisions

Sometimes its hard to follow and just jump in and ask all the questions you need too. Everyone here is so helpful. Just keep following and you will catch on real fast.

well you can start out with show quality or pet quality. SQ you can breed your own line and show. Pet are for pets and really not for show. theres alot of colors. alot. then hatching. thats a whole different ball game. breeding. alot lol. Just ask alot questions. and read up

I am new in Seramas and felt the same way you did as to not knowing what to do first. I decided to order a trio from a good breeder and just enjoy them for a while. Then they began laying eggs and I soon bought an incubator. I think the color thing is very complicated and very uncertain. I have now hatched 16 babies and have 4 more eggs in the bator. It is a lot of fun to see what you get and how they change. Eventually, I will probably go towards certain colors and patterns but what I'm doing now is helping me understand things about all the possibilities. My recommendation to you would be to get some birds (good quality if you want to breed) and learn by doing and just enjoy them. You do not have to have a specific mission when you start. Hope this eases some of the things that are overwhelming you.

I think I'm going to follow your example. I'll get a pair of silkied from June if she has any for sale, and a pair or trio of some kind of other (I'm really fond of those black/brown/gold ones though, do they have a name?). I was just talking with my girl, we both decided we'd learn more about how to take care of them and what they are supposed to look like (breed standards, etc) before we jump right in to showing. Luckily my kid isn't as impatient as I can be!

Oh, and I don't have an incubator. But I will have silkies... hen-o-bators

That will have to work until the money becomes available for an incubator. The outdoor coops need more work, and those come first.

My layers have no problem with tellin' me off when their coop roof springs a leak (like it did tonight
