This is inside of my backyard gazebo and was made out of 3 shipping crates that I tweeked a bit to get this interconnecting 2 story affair. I can also turn it into 3 separate coops if I have too....it is working out SO well. There is a vertical branch that I put horizontal branch steps on so they can go up and down...The birdies love this thing..

One of our pullets just laid her first egg today. It had some blood smeared on it. Is this normal with the first egg? It was a normal sized egg. It was actually very slightly larger than the eggs of my other pullet who has been laying for about a month.

I looked at her vent and didn't see anything protruding, but it didn't seem to be tightly closed either.

I don't know what I'm looking for. I did try candling my other pullet's eggs, but couldn't tell anything.

I read that if you crack a freshly laid egg open and the white spot (germinal disc) on the yoke is circular with concentric rings (rather than irregular shaped) that it's fertile. It's kind of hard to tell, though. By comparing to a grocery store egg, they look more circular.

I'm getting very tempted to get an incubator, but so far I've stopped myself.

Sorry for the late reply.. I was browsing through this thread since i'm so behind and caught yours, I hate the weather that we been having lately! first its all nice and sunny.. then cold with wind which makes it colder, then chilly with sun out. I hope it stays that way, i am not ready for winter.. I still need to rebuilt my chicken coop. something about it isn't safe! since the last horrible incident. But... Yes I did! I'm so happy for my daughter to have new pals. She indeed in love with them. I will post up some pictures soon. and i'm so very thrill for ya! I hope to see some pictures of yours soon as well..

I'm not sure about that,(germ spot shape) , the only way I know as a full proof way is to stick it in the bator for a week then candle it and you will see growth inside the egg. If you are not interested in incubation then it would be interesting to see if in fact you got a double yoker. But some hens just lay larger eggs than their counterparts and it may just be a "normal" egg. If you do decide to get an incubator good luck with the addiction it will create. At least you will be surrounded by friends here!!!

Great set up! What size are the smaller cages and how many birds will you put into one cage that size. Trying to set something up in my garage but so far only have wire dog kennel and guinea pig cage/rabbit cage. Thanks, Brenda
