American serama thread!

He is soooo pretty. Thank goodness it was nothing serious. I also got a patchwork quilt hatch.........so many different color combos. That is why I am hatching more eggs from this trio to see if there is any consistency at all.https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/62617_cimg5314.jpg

Your boyz are handsome Brenda....I like the cocopop colored ones best.

Did you mark the eggs to see who throw what for you from your trio???

Thank you and you answered a big question for me! I really wanted to know if any were cocopop as they looked like they may be but being new to Seramas, I really wasn't sure. I have had the trio together since I got them and it is very difficult to tell whose eggs are whose. I have been trying to tell by any difference in shape but they are pretty close so I would not trust that. I have yet to catch one laying. Of course I know who all the frizzles are from because only one of the hens is frizzled. I have invested in quite a few of the wire kennels and I will be able to separate breeding pairs from now on. I could remove one of the hens but I really do not want her to be alone. I have 8 eggs in the bator and getting ready to set up the other bator for the next batch. I am just interested to see what they produce in this next round.

i had to put mine on a couple of times in the coop but now they all like it and even my juvies are on roosts

so maybe if i put them on it, how high do you have yours?

i would say about 8 inches off the bottom and also I have a higher on in the cage and they use both of them. These birds fly pretty well!

Boy, am off for like 12 hours and YIKES so many posts.......

Franciscreek...that is shameful that someone would sell & ship birdies in that condition. I hope you will be able to get the 3 birds back to health.

I knew from reading and lurking on this thread that someone would make this offer. I thought about it all the way to work and wished that I could make the offer myself. There are such good people that hang out here.

I tend to agree. If this young man has spent his savings on this project he sure doesn't need to take a chance on infecting his coop and possibly other birds that he would eventually show against. I hope you are right and that it is just a shaving in his eye or something, but it sure doesn't look like that to me. Do not under any circumstances expose any of this trio to yours or any other chickens until you know absolutely for sure that it is not something contageous.

Yes, young birds or birds who have never had a roost may need to be placed on the roost a few times before they get it.
I do this with mine after they are a couple months old. Older birds coming in usually take right to a roost once they have been on it.
Height depends on birds and cage height. Not so high as for the tails to rub on top of cage.
Also maybe start lower and then raise if you want. I keep young one pretty low at first....6".
BUt you also don't want their tails to rub on the roost when they go under it.
